Vehicles sold after Dec 1, 2017 to be fitted with FASTag by manufacturer, dealer

NEW DELHI, June 27:
All vehicles under category M & N, sold after December 1, 2017 are required to be fitted with FASTag by the manufacturer of the vehicle or its authorised dealer, as per a Gazette Notification, the Lok Sabha was informed on Thursday.
Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari, in a written reply here, said, “To make availability widespread and maximizing existing vehicles to affix FASTags, Government has made it mandatory to affix FASTag for issuance of National Permit (N/P).”
As many as 22 banks have been certified to issue FASTag across the country. Further, bank neutral FASTag “NHAI FASTag” have been launched for easy availability at petrol-pump and on e-commerce site Amazon, he said.
By adopting these measures, the Government endeavours to increase penetration of FASTag substantially and moving towards 100 per cent cashless.
M&N vehicles refers to vehicles having at least four wheels and used for the carriage of passengers (e.g., standard car with 2, 3, 4 doors) and power-driven vehicles having at least four wheels and used for the carriage of goods, respectively.
FASTag is a simple to use, reloadable tag which enables automatic deduction of toll charges and lets one pass through the toll plaza without stopping for the cash transaction. (UNI)
