NEW DELHI, Feb 16: The Supreme Court today declined to give urgent hearing to the petition filed by aides of sandalwood smuggler Verrappan against the death sentence awarded to them for 1993 landmine blast in Karnataka killing 22 security personnel.
The petition was today mentioned at the residence of Chief Justice of India Justice Altamas Kabir for urgent hearing and also for stay of the execution of the convicts whose mercy petitions were rejected by the President of India Mr Pranab Mukherjee early this week.
A bench headed by CJI Justice Kabir told the counsel for the petitioner that there was no proof that the hanging is eminent.
Earlier,the counsel for the petitioner had submitted that they apprehend that the convicts may be hanged on Sunday.
The apex court, however, was not convinced and said the petitions shall be heard in due course.
The four convicts have been found guilty of killing 22 policemen and their death sentence has been upheld upto the Supreme Court. (UNI)
