JAMMU, Oct 26: Government Medical College (GMC) Jammu got rare distinction and registered its name in world literature for performing a very rare laparoscopic surgery.
This feast was achieved by Postgraduate Department of Surgery when Dr Sanjay Kumar Bhasin, (Associate Professor & Unit Head), a well known surgeon performed laparoscopic cholecystectomy (removal of gall bladder) for gallstones in a 32 years old female patient from Reasi, who was having a very rare body structural abnormality in which heart is notice on right side of chest and liver as well as gallbladder are seen in left side of the abdominal cavity.
This condition is known as Situs Inversus Totalis in medical literature and is seen in 1:20000 live births. Furthermore, gall stones in Situs Inversus Totalis is a very rare case. Till date only 100 odd cases has been reported in the world literature and first time from GMC Jammu.
“Performing laparoscopic surgery in such a situation is very challenging as surgeon and the team has to work from opposite direction that is very tedious for right handed surgeons,”, Dr Bhasin said, adding, there was added challenge in the said patient due to hypothyroidism as well as heart problem that was tackled nicely by the anesthesia team. Patient was discharged from the hospital in satisfactory condition three days after the surgery.
The surgical team who assisted Dr Sanjay Bhasin comprises Dr Sanjay Sharma, Dr Ravinder Kumar, Dr Ankit Gupta and Dr Fallak. The anesthesia team comprised of Prof Mukta Jatinder, Dr Jyoti Khanna and Dr Ajay Gupta.
