JAMMU, Dec 4: A delegation of the residents of Bishnah, led by senior leader of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Member Legislative Council (MLC) Vikramaditya Singh today called on Finance Minister, Dr Haseeb Drabu and apprised him of the problems being faced by the farming community.
Amongst the important matters that were discussed included the waiver of loans to farmers and the Government announced scheme to introduce ‘Kisan Credit card.’ It was brought to the notice of the Minister that this was causing financial and mental stress to the farmers.
Vikramaditya also spoke about procurement of Basmati at a fair price to the farmer. He said the best Basmati in the world is grown in Jammu and exported, but the local growers get a pittance for it. “We must protect our farmers and ensure that they get their due share.”, Singh said.
Vikramaditya Singh further emphasized on the need of taking emergent measures to further popularize Basmati of Jammu region for its marketing at international level. He also impressed upon the Finance Minister that problems of the farming community should be addressed on priority.
The Finance Minister ensured that he would look at both matters and come up with a resolution at the earliest. Accompanying the MLC were District President PDP, Fakir Chand Bhagat, Sat Pal Charak, Chattar Saini and Kabla Singh.
