UDHAMPUR, Aug 3: In absence of a bridge, the villagers in Barkund, Srar, Baup, Matloa risk their lives to reach their destinations by crossing Tawi river with the help of a trolley ropeway at Barkunda,
Two years back, some students got trapped in this trolley ropeway and were saved after a massive operation with the help of Police authorities but for locals, it’s still a lifeline.
Balwan Singh, Sarpanch, said: “Every day, local people from many villages on the Barkund, Srar, Baup, Matloa Chenani Tehsil risk their lives to cross the river. We have written to the District Administration for help, but to no avail. Another local, Pooja Devi said, “People from all villages have to come to this side for Chenani market and hospital.
These villages also produce vegetables, fruit, milk, cheese, Kalari etc but during the rainy days, they are unable to reach the market. Further, it is very difficult for sick people and pregnant women to cross the river in absence of a bridge.
Local people, namely Pavinder Singh, Bansi Lal and Sham Lal said that the construction of the bridge over the Tawi was the responsibility of district administration but it failed to do the needful even as the people lodged several complaints in this regard with the concerned authorities.
