UDHAMPUR, June 19: Inhabitants of village Malhar today protested against the extremely bad condition of newly constructed PMGSY road from Garnai to Lower Garnai Udhampur.
The protestors raised slogans against the PMGSY Department and sought attention of Lieutenant Governor, Girish Chandra Murmu towards the problems being faced the villagers. They alleged that the PMGSY employees were hand in globe with the contractor, who used substandard material in construction of the road, which is the only surface link for the locals with the rest of the world.
This 4-kms road from Garnai to Lower Garnai under Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY), number JK14-299, was constructed by spending an amount of Rs 1, 21, 26000. The road work was started in 2011 and it had to be completed by 2016. However, the completion delayed for three years and the work was completed only last year.
“However, because of no proper drainage system and substandard material used for the construction work, this road is in shambles within an year with the result that it is risky for sick and pregnant women to travel on the stretch for reaching District Hospital Udhampur,” the locals said and added that there are large pits on the road, which invite accidents.
During rainy day, the villagers said, it becomes almost impossible to even to walk on this road with the result that students are unable to go to the schools during bad weather.
“Even as the villagers staged protests many times to highlight the grievance but no action was taken in this regard till date,” they said.
The protesters were addressed by Anita Kumari, Sarpanch Lower Malhar, Karan Singh, Varinder Singh, Ramesh Singh, Inderjeet Singh, Balwan Singh, Amir Singh, Bashir Mohammed and Bicho Bibi.
