UDHAMPUR, Jan 25: Villagers of Upper Rehambal Panchayat (Chopra Shop) today protested in front of Deputy Commissioner’s office against alleged deletion of their names in the voter list.
Carrying placards, the protesting people were raising slogans against the District administration Udhampur and Election Commissioner of Jammu and Kashmir. They alleged that at least 280 names were intentionally deleted from the voter list of Upper Rehambal Panchayat (Chopra Shop) in Valmiki Colony in ward number 1, 2 and 3.
Congress leader Ashwani Khjuria and ward number 1 Councilor Priti Khajuria, who were leading the protest demonstration, l alleged that these 280 names were deleted from the voter list to benefit somebody.
“Even as the matter was brought into the notice of Deputy Commissioner Udhampur, Deputy District Election Officer, BDO and BLO, no action was taken till date,” they said and appealed Governor Satya Pal Malik to get the matter investigated so that guilty officials may be punished and the people can participate in the upcoming elections.
According to a local Suman Devi, who was among the protesting people, they were living in the locality for many years and had voted in the last Assembly elections as well as Parliament polls. However, she added, during the recently held Panchayat elections, their names was missing in the voter list for the reasons best known to the concerned authorities.
