AKHNOOR, Jan 7: Villagers demonstrated by raising slogans against the Flood and Control Department for negligence in the development work being carried out to prevent land erosion at many places in the areas adjacent to the Chenab River, here today.
They demanded from the Chief Minister Omar Abdullah that quality of the development work being carried out on the banks of the Chenab River should be checked.
Taking cognizance of the protest, the Flood and Control Department is learnt to have put a stop on the ongoing work and initiated quality check by issuing notice to the contractor.
Pertinent to mention that the Government of Jammu and Kashmir has released an amount of Rs 55 crore and started the work of putting crates to stop land erosion of Chenab river at places like Indri Patan, Devipur, Dalbhat Bhaur, Chaunjaya, Sita Ala, Maira, etc adjoining villages of Chenab river, Bakor and Indri Patan.
On Tuesday, a number of villagers demonstrated at the work site by raising slogans against the Flood and Control Department and demanded that the quality of work be checked and action be taken against the guilty people. They alleged poor quality work.
Kewal Kumar, Satpal, Ravi Kumar and other villagers warned that if the work of putting crates for land erosion in Chenab river is not done with good quality, Flood and Control Department would be responsible for the fault.
According to the Executive Engineer of Flood and Control Department, Sunil Gupta, work in Bakor and Indri Patan villages has been stopped and a notice has been issued to the contractor while quality of the work will be checked.
