SRINAGAR, May 3: Scores of villagers belonging to over a dozen villages today staged a protest against the National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC) at Gantmulla in Baramulla district and alleged that the Corporation has failed fto provide adequate electricity in them.
Reports said the protesters assembled at the main road in Gantmulla and blocked the Srinagar-Muzaffarabad highway for one hour. The protesters who had come from 15 villages raised slogans against the NHPC and demanded adequate electricity to their respective villages.
They said they are receiving electricity under the NHPC power supply line and from past several days they are not getting electricity due to which they are facing tremendous hardships. After the protesters blocked the highway, the area witnessed massive traffic jam thereby leaving the commuters and the passengers in the vehicles to suffer, said the reports.
Eye-witnesses said that hundreds of vehicles were stranded on the either side of the road. Meanwhile, Tehsildar Baramulla visited the spot and assured protesters that the genuine demands will be redressed soon. The protesters later dispersed peacefully.
