Visiting faculties in Medical Colleges

Since new medical colleges are coming up in Jammu and Kashmir which requires a professional teaching infrastructure coupled with the existing shortage of teaching staff in the existing medical colleges, the need to outsource the faculty requirement in these colleges is felt. In this connection, as an immediate resolution of the problem, Government of Jammu and Kashmir has framed rules under which visiting faculty on part time basis , initially for two years and extendable by another year depending on the circumstances, shall be allowed to boost the levels of medical education in the Union Territory as well as offset the existing shortage of teaching staff.
The visiting faculty shall be selected, on part time basis, to serve the purposes of teaching at graduation and post graduation levels in pre-clinical, para- clinical and clinical departments. These shall be the teaching posts of the levels of the Professors and Associate Professors as in the GMCs of the UT. Can this outsourcing be independent of the available talent in the UT or to supplement the existing strength, the rules have it that such part time arrangements shall not exceed 50 per cent of the sanctioned posts of Professors and Associate Professors in any discipline. There shall be transparency in the selection process as that would be done by a Selection Committee which is highly desirable in the instant matter. However, honorarium of Rs. 10000 and Rs.8000 per day for the Professors and Associate Professors respectively and for maximum of ten days per month, looks absolutely plausible. Any step taken towards resolution of shortage of Doctors and Medical Specialists in Jammu and Kashmir is the right step and most needed one.
