JAMMU, Apr 7: A visually-impaired advocate from Jammu Suraj Singh today demanded the J&K administration to implement disability laws in the Union Territory and provide him his due legal rights as a disabled person.
Addressing a press conference at High Court complex Janipur (Jammu), Advocate Suraj Singh who has been sitting on Fast unto Death, told media persons that he being a person with disability is only demanding his due legal rights but the UT administration is constantly ignoring his demands.

Advocate Suraj Singh said that he wants the UT Government to fulfill the all the posts meant for disabled persons from back log quota by initiating special recruitment drives. He said directions were also passed in this connection to the states by the Supreme Court of India on Oct 8, 2013 while hearing a case but J&K administration did not pay heed to the directions of even Supreme Court.
He further stated that the chief ministers of the states have 5 percent discretionary quota with them and through this quota, they can allot residential accommodations of the Estates Department to the needy persons like him but no such accommodation was ever allotted to needy persons like him.
“Against the alleged failure of the Government to implement disability laws in the Union Territory, I had sat on protest dharna from March 8 to 17 and only on the assurance of the Chief Justice of J&K and Ladakh that he will take notice of the matter, I suspended my protest but few days back I received message from the office of the Chief Justice that he cannot take suo motu action in the matter,” said the visually impaired Advocate.
He said if the Government and judiciary cannot act on his demands and implement disability laws, he should be shot to death.
