People asked to enlist for donation

JAMMU, Sept 5: Swami Vivekananda Medical Mission Charitable Hospital Ambphalla ,Jammu held awareness programme on Eye Donation today under the Chairmanship of Dr Subash Gupta, former Principal Govt Medical College, Jammu and Chief Patron, SVMM in association with J&K State Organ Transplant Organization to increase awareness among the general public regarding this noble cause.
Today’s event included an awareness lecture by Dr. Suruchi Gupta (Senior eye surgeon at SWMMCH), discussing the causes, load of blindness and why corneal transplant is the need of hour to prevent blindness. At this occasion, Dr Sanjeev Puri (joint director SOTTO) also shared a talk proving the information on the status of organ transplant and eye banking in J&K, role of SOTTO, how people can become donor in J&K. In addition, Dr Subash Gupta (Former Principal, and HOD Ophthalmology Govt Medical College, Jammu) also shared his personal experience regarding eye banking and corneal transplant.J&K SOTTO was also represented by Anshu Sharma, Medical Consultant and Irfan Ahmad, Transplant Coordinator.
In addition, Dr. Suruchi Gupta also informed that the SWMMCH has proposed to start corneal transplant and have applied to the central government for the permission for the same. In this pursuit, hospital has installed high end corneal machines like Pentacam, specular microscope (the only private eye hospital in Jammu to have these facilities). Eye department of the hospital is conducting all the major surgeries including cataract, glaucoma, cornea surgeries at very minimal charges. “We are in process of Ayushman registration so that we can help poor patients further. Even few NGO’s are associated with us who can help us supply free cornea from few eye banks helping us to provide free corneal transplant to poor patients. Even AIIMS, Delhi is also under collaboration to provide free artificial cornea “, she said
