SRINAGAR, June 19: Yudhvir Singh Malik, Chairman National Highways Authority of India, called on Governor N.N. Vohra at the Raj Bhavan here today.
Malik briefed the Governor about the to-date status of both the on-going as well as the proposed road and highway projects in Jammu and Kashmir being implemented by the National Highway Authority of India.
Among the ongoing works the Governor had detailed discussions with Malik about the completion of the remainder portions of the Udhampur-Banihal and the Banihal-Srinagar sectors of the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway.
The Governor stressed the need for ensuring very early completion of all the road projects, particularly the Udhampur-Srinagar segment of the National Highway. He also urged Malik to devote particular attention to the maintenance of existing highways and ensure the provision of Lay Overs and Way Side Amenities along all National Highways alongside removal of the rapidly increasing encroachments along the Highways. He also pointed to the need for plantation of suitable varieties of both flowering and shady trees along all the Highways.
A delegation of the J&K Handicapped Association, Srinagar, led by Abdul Rashid Bhat, President of the Association also called on Governor.
The delegation’s demands included provision of an ambulance for physically handicapped people, requesting the Revenue Department to expedite transfer of land identified for establishment of a School and Training Centre for Physically Handicapped Persons; urging the State Government to take early action on the decisions taken in a meeting chaired by the Chief Minister in February 2017 which, interalia, included implementation of the Persons with Disability Act, 2016; provision of office accommodation in each District Headquarters with Central Offices at Jammu/ Srinagar; providing benefits of the National Food Security Scheme to persons with disability; provision of electronic wheel chairs for persons with disabilities; reservation in professional colleges; setting up of an Advisory Board for economic and social development of physically challenged persons etc.
The Governor observed that he would have an early meeting with Sajjad Gani Lone, Social Welfare Minister for securing the early settlement of all the issues raised by the delegation.
