JAMMU, Feb 15: Jammu-born Sargam Koushal, who won the Mrs World crown to India in December last year, said that she wants to work for the society and her main focus will be on women empowerment and educating youth against drug abuse.
“The menace of drugs is ruining lives of our young generation. Earlier, youth of Jammu and Kashmir were not exposed to this menace but in last one decade, this menace has spread like a fire in the region,” Sargam said while interacting with media persons in Jammu as she visited her home town first time after winning the Mrs World crown in December last year.
The Mumbai-based model, 32, became the first Indian to win the crown after Aditi Govitrikar in 2001. Sargam said, “We are planning a campaign against drug abuse by May this year for the youth of J&K to keep them away from drugs.” She further expressed her wish to work for women empowerment and self defense of young girls.
On joining Bollywood, Sargam said, “I will feel good if an opportunity comes my way from Bollywood. I would not mind it at all but right now there are more important things to do.”
She said J&K is an important part of the country and the youth here are talented enough but they lack exposure. Sargam said most of the women did not think about them after marriage and sacrificed all their dreams for family. They should not shun their dreams and aspirations and give them importance. “If they (women) will follow their dreams, support of the family and friends will come up automatically,” she asserted.
The Mrs World gave credit of her achievement to her parents and husband. “I am doing modelling and will continue to do so. I started modelling even though I like teaching the most. Modelling was my passion and my parents were also fascinated with it and encouraged me to move forward,” she said.
She said the turning point in her life came when her husband, who is an Indian Navy officer, was transferred to Mumbai. “My modelling career started from there and then I did not look back,” Sargam said, adding the competition for Mrs World crown was tough but she was also tough enough to face the competition.
