At a press conference, the 58-year-old Guru, now contesting as an independent candidate from Sopore Assembly constituency of Baramulla district, expressed frustration that Sopore has been neglected over three decades.
He said that people have decided to participate in the electoral process. “For the past 35 years, Sopore has been overlooked and carries an anti-label that also affects our family. I am here to remove that label,” he said.
Guru pointed out that no Assembly member has addressed the issues faced by the people or worked for the area’s development. “I am here now, and it is up to the people to decide whether they want me to represent them,” he added.
He also mentioned his confusion over the Kashmir issue and criticized politicians for their handling of it. “For weeks now, Kashmir has been back in the discussion, with some advocating for 53 positions or self-rule. In the end, nothing changed, we even lost what we had, and politicians are to blame.”
Guru acknowledged that the situation has improved compared to a decade ago and stated that small incidents of violence will not affect the election process. “There is peace now, and people are ready to participate in the elections,” he said.
