Srinagar, Mar 17: The continuous dumping of garbage along the Jhelum River banks in Sherpora area of Sopore in Baramulla district is seriously endangering the health of residents and harming the water body.
Concerns are escalating as the unchecked accumulation of waste threatens not only the health of local inhabitants but also the delicate ecosystem of the Jhelum, upon which a significant population relies for their water needs. “This improper dumping of waste is damaging the ecosystem and putting us vulnerable to health concerns,” voiced a resident.
Residents said they are witnessing firsthand the transformation of the riverbank into a cesspool, attributing the phenomenon to the rampant and unauthorised disposal of garbage. Among the waste, polythene bags and plastic bottles stand out as primary culprits, notorious for their adverse environmental impact. The gravity of the situation is underscored by the fact that the Jhelum serves as a lifeline, catering to the drinking water needs of thousands in the town. However, the deteriorating condition of the river paints a grim picture of the quality of drinking water. “The authorities should take all measures to protect it from pollution, as the freshwater biodiversity is in crisis,” a resident said.
The locals said while the Municipal Council of Baramulla has initiated garbage collection services in various town wards, the challenge persists in finding suitable disposal sites for the amassed waste, compounding the issue further. “There is an urgent need to address the issue to save people from its harmful effects,” locals said.
