Water crisis persists in Sidhra area

Sanjeev K. Sharma JAMMU, Dec 4: Despite more than four years have passed when the elected body of Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC) was formed, problems in Ward Number 71 still have not been resolved, not even to some acceptable limits, and the six Nallahs (deep drains) in the Ward cause havoc in rainy season every year. This was stated by Shama Akhtar, JMC Councillor from the Ward who informed that water from these flooded Nallahs enters residential houses in the area during rainy seasons thereby causing damage. She claimed that complete reconstruction of these Nallahs was immediately required but the same could not be done so far even though the estimate for the work was made. “Due to lack of funds this vital work failed to see the light of the day,” she maintained adding: “Even pick and choose policy is being adopted by the authorities concerned in giving funds under smart city project as nothing was given to my Ward in this regard.” In an exclusive interaction with the Excelsior Shama, who is a first time Councilor and was an Independent candidate, said that areas of his Ward include Sidhra, Raghoora, Majeen and Dawra. She informed that despite her best efforts, construction of a tube-well and some hand-pumps could not be materialised in the Ward and replacement of old water supply pipes in the Ward also met the same fate. The Councillor also said that water supply in the Ward is made after 3-4 days and some tube-wells are not functional in the area which the concerned authorities have never paid any attention to make them correct despite repeated efforts by her and others from the area resulting which people of the area continue to suffer. “Even new coolers have been installed in the Ward but as water problem exists in the area these are proving to be of no use,” she continued. Shama also said that hanging wires and damaged poles at many places in the Ward could not be corrected due to lack of funds and carelessness of the officials concerned. “Only 40 per cent repair and construction of lanes and drains could be done in my Ward due to shortage of funds,” she said. The Councillor also said that only 50 per cent road blacktopping has been completed in her Ward while 80 per cent Street Lights were installed there of which 50 per cent are non-functional and the agency concerned to correct the fault in these lights never repairs these lights in time due to which the public suffers. “There are four parks in the Ward which are properly maintained with facilities like Open Air Gyms, lights, tiles, seats etc,” she said adding that there is no playground, no Community Hall, no parking place for vehicles and even no Ward office in her Ward. The Councillor said that there are17 ponds in the Ward for whose development estimate is ready but no work has been started so far due to official red tape culture prevailing in the offices of J&K government. She also said sewerage work has not yet started in her Ward and there are 43 Safai Karamcharis in the Ward to ensure cleanliness but being a big Ward 40 more Safai Karamcharis are required there to have cleanliness of satisfactorily level. “The door-to-door moving autos to collect the garbage from homes are doing a good job but as only two autos are provided in my Ward there is a need of two more as it is a big Ward,” the Councillor said adding that the service of these autos have reduced the number of garbage dumps in the area. Shama also said that Smart Meters have not been installed in her Ward so far and there are two crematoriums, two Shishu Smadhis and three graveyards in the Ward which have all the required facilities. “Open defecation still is there in some areas of the Ward and there is only one public toilet while the house numbering in the Ward has only been done for 10 per cent houses,” she claimed. Shama also said that though many widows, physically challenged and old age people of her Ward get pension but the newly introduced rule of these pensions exclusively to Below Poverty Line people is creating problems for others. The JMC Councillor also said that cases of thefts involving iron grating from the drains have been reported from her Ward and there are many drug addicts and peddlers active in the area for which the police should take a cognizance. She claimed that most of the people in her Ward have got their Ayushman Cards and many of the eligible Voters have made their Voter Cards while same is the status of Domicile Certificates there. Locals of the Ward informed that a Health Centre is urgently required in the Ward.
