JAMMU, July 17: Apart from recovery of American-make weapons like M4 Carbines from separate encounters with security forces in Jammu and Kashmir, officials hint at the supply of weapons from Afghanistan to Pakistan that have reached the UT, posing the next level of challenge for security forces.

Official data revealed a year-on-year increase in both weapon recoveries and AK-series weapons since 2021.
Last week, terrorists were found using American-made M4 carbine assault rifles during terror attack at Badnoti near Machedi in Billawar area of Kathua district. In previous gun battles in Doda, Poonch and Rajouri, these weapons have been used, the officials said.
Security agencies suspect that these weapons, left behind by the US Army after their withdrawal from Afghanistan in 2021, have finally reached J&K and are now in the hands of terrorists targeting civilians and security personnel.
Last year, Central Intelligence Agencies also received a lead indicating that the logistics, arms, and ammunition used in the Poonch attack, which resulted in the martyrdom of five RR jawans, came from Taliban-ruled Afghanistan. The local police investigation into the Poonch attack also suspected that the bullets used in the attack were from Afghanistan, left by US forces post their exit.
In fact, on many occasions, security forces have found sophisticated weapons beyond just AK-47s. In December 2022, police in the Jammu region seized a significant cache of arms and ammunition, including seven AK-47 rifles, one US-made M4 rifle, and three pistols, along with grenades. The J&K Police reported that four terrorists were seeking an opportunity for an encounter to target security forces.
Several security agencies at the time of exit of US forces from Afghanistan had cautioned that weapons left by the US Army there could land into the hands of Taliban and can reach Jammu and Kashmir via Pakistan.
Meanwhile, Director General of Police, RR Swain today said that every policeman in the force will “fight shoulder to shoulder and avenge” following a militant attack in Doda in which four Army soldiers were martyred.
“Every single policeman of J&K Police will fight shoulder to shoulder and avenge; we will make sure the enemies pay a heavy price,” he said in an interview with a national news channel.
