WD to hit region on May 11,12

JAMMU, May 8: While the Western Disturbance (WD) may hit the Jammu and Kashmir and parts of Himachal on May 11 and 12, the weather may remain dry and hot during next two days in the region.

The MeT office Srinagar has predicted that the weather will remain dry and hot during the next two days in Jammu and Kashmir. It said the plains of Jammu division, including Jammu, Samba, Kathua districts and parts of Akhnoor and Khour Sub Divisions, the temperature will reach 38 degrees Celsius to 40 degrees Celsius during the period and can be the hottest weather during this period of the season.
Jammu City recorded a maximum of 38.7 degrees Celsius temperature today, which is about 2 degrees above the normal on this day of the season, whereas, the minimum temperature in Jammu remained 22.1 degrees Celsius, about 0.9 degrees below normal.
It said the temperatures in Kashmir and other plains of Jammu will also remain four to five degrees Celsius above normal during the next couple of days.
The MeT official further disclosed that a mild Western Disturbance (WD) is likely to hit Jammu and Kashmir during May 11-12 and can trigger light rain, snow over higher reaches, and thunder at many places. A few places may also receive moderate rain, particularly during May 12.
The weather may turn partially to generally cloudy with light rain at a few places on May 13, while from May 14 to May 17, the weather is likely to remain dry over Jammu and Kashmir.
The farmers have been advised by the MeT office to suspend farm operations during May 11 and 12 amid inclement weather predictions in Kashmir valley.
“Barring frontier Kashmir district of Kupwara, the minimum temperature recorded during the intervening night of Tuesday and Wednesday was 0 to 3 degrees Celsius above normal in Kashmir valley,” the official added.
The day temperature was also 5 to 6 degrees Celsius above normal in all weather stations in Kashmir valley on the previous day. Srinagar recorded a low of 11.6 degrees Celsius, and it was 0.9 degrees Celsius above normal for the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir during this period of the season.
Pahalgam had a low of 5.5, and it was normal for the tourist spot of south Kashmir, while Gulmarg recorded 9.0 degrees Celsius and it was 3.8 degrees Celsius above normal for the famous ski resort of north Kashmir on Wednesday, the MeT official said.
Meanwhile, day temperatures may remain above normal at many places over Ladakh, Gilgit, Baltistan, Himachal Pradesh and most places over Punjab and Chandigarh. The hailstorms were also expected at isolated places over the northern region.
Rain or thundershowers may occur at a few places in the Himalayan and sub-Himalayan region including J&K, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Meghalya, Assam and Arunachal Pradesh, the MeT office said.
