Weatherman forecasts rain, snow

Srinagar, Feb 21: Weatherman today forecast widespread light to moderate rain and snow for next 24 hours across Kashmir even as night temperature here dropped to below freezing point.
“Widespread light to moderate rain/snow, mainly over higher reaches most likely during February 22-23 with main activity on February 22 (night) and February 23,” a Meteorological Department official said here, adding, “It may affect highways like Jammu-Srinagar, Sinthan Top, Sadhna Top etc.” After this spell, the official said, there’s no forecast of any major rain or snow for the next 10 days.
Srinagar, in the meantime, recorded a low of minus 2.2 degree Celsius against last night’s 0.1 degree Celsius. The temperature of the place was below 3.1 degree Celsius than the normal for this time of the year.
Qazigund recorded a low of minus 2.8 degree Celsius against minus 0.8 degree Celsius the previous night.
Kokernag had a low of 3.0 degree Celsius against minus 2.6 degree Celsius the previous night.
Pahalgam recorded a low of minus 6.0 degree Celsius against minus 4.3 degree Celsius last night.
Gulmarg recorded a low of minus 8.0 degree Celsius, same as on the previous night. The temperature of the place was 1.3 degree Celsius below normal for this time of the year.
Kupwara recorded a low of minus 3.0 degree Celsius against minus 2.3 degree Celsius the previous night.
While ‘Chillai Kalan’, the 40-day long harshest period of winter ended on January 30, and 20-day long ‘Chillai Khurd’ culminated on February 19, Kashmir is presently under the grip of 10-day-long ‘Chillai Bachha’.
Leh recorded a low of minus 13.5 degree Celsius against last night minus 10.7 degree Celsius while mercury at Kargil settled at minus 18.2 degree Celsius.
Drass recorded a low of minus 21.6 degree Celsius against minus 13.5 degree Celsius the previous night.
