New Delhi, Feb 28: WhatsApp has suffered a widespread disruption, impacting users globally. The problem seems to have hit both the app and the platform’s web version. Reports on social media suggest that users are unable to connect or send messages via WhatsApp app, WhatsApp Web and are unable to make any calls.
Downdetector, an online service monitoring website performance, recorded a significant surge in user complaints, with over 9000 people in India reporting issues in sending messages, constituting about 80% of total reports. Other reports include server connection problems and issues with the app.
The outage, which began around 8:56 pm IST, peaked at around 9.15 pm. Members of The Times of India tech team faced problems in sending messages on app as well as on WhatsApp Web and were unable to make WhatsApp calls at the time of writing.
On a global level, around 7000 people reported problems in sending messages (53%), server connections (36%) and the app (10%). Meta, WhatsApp’s parent company, has yet to issue an official statement regarding the cause of the outage.
