WHO declares India maternal tetanus and YAWS free

NEW DELHI: India has been declared maternal and neonatal tetanus elimination (MNTE) and YAWS free.

Announcing these achievements at a function here, Union Health and Family Welfare Minister J P Nadda today said India was among the first countries to achieve this much ahead of target.           Speaking on the occasion, Dr Poonam Khetrapal Singh, World Health Organisation (WHO) Regional  Director for South-East Asia, said the country has achieved a momentous public health feat ‘the elimination of maternal and neonatal tetanus. Maternal and neonatal tetanus has been reduced to less than one case per 1,000 live births in all 675 districts of the country.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has validated this achievement by adding India to the list of countries that have successfully battled this killer disease.  (AGENCIES)
