Wildlife Deptt conducts anti-poaching raids in Srinagar, one arrested

SRINAGAR, Dec 10: The Department of Wildlife Protection Wetland Division conducted a series of raids in Srinagar today following the circulation of social media videos that allegedly showed individuals involved in illegal poaching activities at Wular Lake.
An official said that they arrested a poacher Farooq Ahmad Baktoo from the Habak area of Srinagar during the raid. He said that one 12-bore gun and other gears including decoys used for poaching were recovered from him.
In a statement, the department said, “The Department of Wildlife Protection Wetland Division has initiated a series of raids in the Srinagar area in response to social media videos showing individuals allegedly involved in illegal poaching activities at Wular Lake. The videos depicted individuals carrying firearms, suggesting involvement in wildlife hunting, prompting swift action from the authorities.”
The raids were carried out in the early hours of December 10 at multiple locations, with the aim of apprehending those involved. While further details are awaited, preliminary reports suggest that the operation may result in the confiscation of firearms and potential arrests of suspects.
The department emphasized that the operation highlights its commitment to protecting wildlife and addressing illegal activities that threaten protected areas.
