Srinagar, Dec 2: The Principal of Government Medical College (GMC) Baramulla, Dr. Majid Jahangir, stated today that he will ensure minimizing referrals to tertiary care hospitals.
Speaking to reporters a few days after assuming office following the retirement of his predecessor, Dr Jahangir acknowledged existing challenges but assured that he would do his best to address them.
“I will strive to reduce referrals to Srinagar, thereby easing the burden on tertiary care hospitals, especially for maternity cases that add to the load at Lal Ded Hospital. These issues will be prioritized,” he said.
Dr. Jahangir highlighted that the Associated Hospital of GMC Baramulla serves all of North Kashmir and handles trauma cases due to its strategic location. “We will ensure the best possible care, including comprehensive maternity services,” he added.
He emphasized that patient care issues would be addressed on a priority basis and expressed his commitment to making GMC Baramulla the premier medical college in Kashmir.
“While challenges exist, I am determined to ensure that this college becomes the best in the region and that the hospital delivers the highest standard of patient care. Efforts are underway to make the ICUs fully operational,” he said.
During the interaction, journalists raised concerns about patient care and facilities at the hospital, including the occasional absence of senior doctors in the emergency ward during evening hours.
Responding to these queries, Dr Jahangir assured that all critical issues affecting patients and their attendants would be addressed promptly.
“While changes won’t happen overnight, every issue will be reviewed and resolved to bring greater transparency to GMC Baramulla’s functioning,” he said.
The Principal also emphasized teamwork, coordination, and commitment as key to achieving excellence in patient care and medical education.
“To transform GMC Baramulla into a center of excellence, the support of all stakeholders, including the media fraternity, is essential. I firmly believe in coordinated efforts and look forward to working together to elevate this institution to new heights,” he said.
It is worth noting that the issue of referrals from district hospitals to tertiary care facilities in Srinagar has long been a challenge for authorities, despite Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) being in place.
Tertiary care hospitals continue to receive patients who could otherwise be managed locally.
Meanwhile, in a circular issued today, the Principal of GMC Baramulla called for biometric attendance compliance, directing faculty and staff members to mark their attendance in accordance with official timings, Monday to Friday, 9:00 am to 5:00 am and Saturday, 9:00 am to 1:30 pm.
The directive further stated that any instances of non-compliance will result in appropriate actions, which will be communicated to higher authorities.
