Srinagar, Dec 1: With Kashmir bracing for a likely harsh winter season under the La Niña influence, authorities today said that they have ensured effective readiness to deal with the challenges.
Speaking with reporters after visiting the JKSSB examination centres, Divisional Commissioner V.K. Bidhuri said that this winter, the power supply is likely to improve, provided consumers cooperate.
“We were anticipating La Niña and started preparations well in advance. Last year, we experienced late snowfall, but this year, we are likely to face a harsh winter season, for which the preparations are better than what we had in place last year,” he said.
It is worth noting that La Niña, a global weather phenomenon, is expected to intensify cold spells and bring heavier-than-usual snowfall to the region, as per the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
Recognizing these conditions early, the administration initiated extensive measures last year to ensure essential services remain intact.
Bidhuri emphasized that the Kashmir Power Distribution Corporation Limited (KPDCL) has implemented an efficient curtailment schedule to minimize disruptions, while acknowledging the drying up of water resources affecting power supply.
“The KPDCL is preparing a revised power curtailment schedule, but what is crucial is public support and cooperation,” he said, adding “if people use crude gadgets and resort to injudicious use of electricity, it will have an overall negative impact.”
The Divisional Commissioner expressed optimism about better power supply this winter compared to last year, underlining the robust plans in place.
He assured improved power availability and fewer outages, adding that the administration is fully aware of La Niña’s potential impact.
Bidhuri also urged the public to avoid makeshift fixes during transformer breakdowns, stressing that with better plans in place, the administration will overcome the challenges of a harsh winter while ensuring reliable services for the public.
Referring to a recent incident in Kupwara where a pregnant woman delivered her baby on the roadside because she could not reach the hospital due to slippery snow-covered roads, Bidhuri noted that the matter is being investigated.
