‘Night scene witnessed during day’

JAMMU, Oct 3: Heavy rain and wind storm hit Jammu and many other areas of the region today while power supply was snapped after falling of trees and wires in the temple city.
With heavy downpour in the afternoon in Jammu, the temperature witnessed a sharp fall of nearly 4.5 degree Celsius this evening. Within an hour of heavy rain, water logging was created in many parts of winter capital city. It also affected the movement of traffic for some time. With the blowing of cold winds in the evening, the people in Jammu city suspected the use of even fans.

At around 4.30 pm the thick black clouds over cast the Jammu sky creating night like scene. The vehicles were seen moving on roads using full head lights as it turned total darkness during the day in Jammu. However, with the continuous rain , the visibility improved.
The wind storm during rain also caused damage to the Government and public property at several places. The trees and their branches also fell down at many places and broken the electric cables, leading to disruption of power supply in many areas. A long wall collapsed at Kunjwani Chowk during rain this evening but no loss of life was reported. Another old wall was collapsed in Transport Nagar area behind Wave Mall but no loss of human life was reported.
A big tree near Cooperative School on Marble Market Road in Jammu was uprooted and fell down on the road. It caused extensive damage to the wall and also disrupted movement of traffic for hours. The electricity cables and few poles were also broken with this fall.
A senior PDD official said that power supply to many city areas was snapped due to falling of tress, their branches and poles. Some transformers were also damaged at few places. The PDD staff was working on war footing to restore the supply. He claimed that supply to nearly 80-90 % area has been restored by late this evening in the city. But some areas in the outskirts and rural belt are still affected.
