Winter, Budget session may be merged

NEW DELHI : In view of the surge in Covid cases in the capital, and the possibility of it worsening in coming weeks, the Government is contemplating holding a single extended session of Parliament instead of separate Winter and Budget sessions.
According to sources on Tuesday, “Discussions are on in this regard in the Government circle, which is yet to be finalised.”
The winter session of Parliament usually starts from the last week of November or first week of December, while the Budget session starts from the last week of January.
The Union Budget is tabled on February 1.
The monsoon session of Parliament, which was held from September 14 in midst of the pandemic, was cut short by eight days and concluded on September 24.
According to a Niti Aayog assessment, an “unprecedented situation” has emerged in Delhi, which could worsen in coming weeks with fresh Covid cases rising to 500 per million population (about 10,000 fresh cases per day).
It is up almost 40 per cent from around 361 per million currently, the assessment said, highlighting violation of Coronavirus norms during the festive season. (AGENCIES)
