Flooded lanes, roads create havoc in City

JAMMU, Aug 7: A 60-year-old woman died in a house collapse in remote Khawas area of district Rajouri and several structures were damaged and washed away as heavy rain lashed large parts of the Jammu region, throwing life out of gear today.

Reports said that river Chenab, Tawi, Munawaar Tawi in Rajouri besides many Nallahs were flooded and caused damage to several temporary and other structures. An alert was sounded in the low lying areas of Chenab after the water level reached near 28 ft at Akhnoor in the afternoon.
Due to landslide, Samba- Mansar-Udhampur road was blocked for about an hour, however, the road was cleared as the weather improved. The flash flood in several seasonal Nallahs in Jammu and its outskirts caused disruption in the traffic movement. Most of the crossings and city roads were waterlogged during morning hours.
Reports from Rajouri said that one Kako Devi, wife of Sarnu, resident of Gunda village in Khawas area was buried alive along with her two cows when her mud-house collapsed due to heavy rain, during early hours today. Her body was later removed from the debris along with the buried cows. The family is very poor and the local Panchayat members urged the District administration to provide financial assistance to the family.
Another report said that about half a dozen structures were damaged at Dunga village in Kathua district following a cloudburst/flood in the Nallah, the officials said, adding there was no report of any casualty in the area. These Kucha structures/ Kullas mostly belong to nomads who have gone to the mountains with their cattle.
Heavy rain lashed Jammu for more than three hours from 9 am and caused waterlogging in low lying areas, disrupting daily life with main city roads witnessing very slow traffic movement.
People faced hardships while commuting through the flooded roads at various places, including Dogra Chowk, Canal Road, Bikram Chowk, Gandhi Nagar, Shastri Nagar, Nanak Nagar, Nai Basti, Jeevan Nagar, Gorkha Nagar, Sanjay Nagar, Gangyal and many other localities. Many residents and shopkeepers saw their premises inundated.
The goods of the traders in Ware House area suffered massive loss and triggering massive protest from them. In Nanak Nagar’s Sector 9, lanes were over flooded with nearly two ft water which entered many houses and business establishments, causing huge loss. In Talab Tilloo area also, the water entered many houses and caused damage to public property. The electricity supply also remained disrupted in many city areas especially Apsara Road and Talab Tillo during rain. The downpour also led to an increase in the water level in the Tawi and other Nallas but there was no immediate threat of floods ans maximum water level in Tawi remained nearly 7.5 ft today, the officials said.
According to MeT office, Rajouri district recorded the highest rainfall at 74 mm during last 24 hours, followed by Jammu at 71.4 mm, Ramban 17.5 mm and Katra 6.9 mm.
The MeT office has forecast wet weather across Jammu division till August 15 with intense showers for a brief period and possibility of flash floods and landslides in vulnerable places across Jammu and Kashmir and heavy rainfall at isolated places in Jammu division.
After rain a sharp fall in temperature in Jammu area was recorded today. Jammu City recorded a maximum temperature of 30.5 deg C while Srinagar 31.1 deg today; Katra town a maximum temperature of 28.4 deg C, Bhaderwah 31.2 deg, Batote 27.1 deg, Gulmarg 21.0, Pahalgam 2.8 deg and Leh 26.5 deg C today.
