JAMMU, Nov 10: A woman was found dead under mysterious circumstances at her in-laws’ residence in Balchak Village, near Arnia town, on Saturday evening, police said.
The deceased has been identified as Renu Devi (30), wife of Balwinder Kumar of Balchak.
According to police officials, a team was immediately dispatched to the scene upon receiving the report, and the body was taken into custody.
After a post-mortem examination, the body was handed over to the legal heirs for final rites, they said.
Police have initiated an inquest to determine the cause of death and are investigating the circumstances surrounding it.
Meanwhile, the family members of Renu Devi, who hailed from Malpur Village in Akhnoor, gathered outside the medical facility, where the post-mortem was conducted in RS Pura and raised slogans, accusing the deceased woman’s in-laws of subjecting her to torture and ultimately causing her death.
Sonu, the brother of the deceased, alleged that Renu had frequently complained about physical abuse by her in-laws.
He also claimed that the woman’s in-laws had borrowed approximately Rs 1 lakh from their family, which had not been repaid, and were reportedly pressuring Renu to settle the debt.
Sonu has called on the police to take swift action and bring the accused to justice, urging that strict punishment be imposed to prevent future incidents of abuse and harassment of women.
