Srinagar, Jan 12: Militants struck second time in Sopore area of North Kashmir since yesterday critically injuring a woman Panch and a Congress worker by firing at her at point blank range.
The doctors at the Sub-District hospital Sopore told Excelsior that the woman Sarpanch was also shot in neck as was the Sarpanch of village Gooripora Bomai who was killed by gun men yesterday.
Police said that 45-year-old Zooni wife of Mohammad Ramzan Dar was shot at point blank range this evening outside her house in Dar Mohalla at village Shiva in Sopore area of North Kashmir’s Baramulla district.
Dar was rushed to Sub District Hospital Sopore in critical condition. The doctors referred her to Srinagar for specialised treatment and described her condition as critical.
Reports said that two men appeared outside Dar house and one of them barged inside the house and fired at her from point blank range. “The man who shot her was masked”, reports added.
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said he would review area domination security for Panchayat members tomorrow. “The injured lady has been shifted to Srinagar. I hope she makes a complete recovery. Will review area domination security tomorrow”, he tweeted.
This is for the second time since yesterday that gun men struck in restive Sopore area of North Kashmir. This is the same area where the security forces achieved a major success by eliminating 9 top militants of Lashkar-e-Toiba in a week long operation last month.
Yesterday gunmen shot dead Sarpanch Habibullah Mir son of Mohammad Akbar Mir of Gooripora Bomai in Sopore area of North Kashmir’s Baramulla district.
The Sarpanch was killed while he was on site inspecting the works in the village under Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA).
Police said that in both the attacks the gunmen used pistols and carried out attacks at point blank range. This is the second attack on the elected Panchayat members this year while so far 4 Panchayat members were killed since elections were held to Panchayat in 2011 after a gap of 34 years.
This is the second attack after last year’s elections to 2 Legislative Council seats in Kashmir valley for which over 16,000 Panchs and Sarpanchs voted and elected Ghulam Nabi Monga and Ali Mohammad Dar as their members in the LC from Kashmir division.
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said last week that after investigations it has been found that militants were not involved in the attacks on the Panchayat members and he instead said that surrendered and for former militants were used for these attacks which were carried out due to personal enmity.
Meanwhile, the contractor who was abducted by militants yesterday in South Kashmir’s Pulwama district was killed by his abductors during the night.
Police said that 40-year- old, Mohammad Shafi Dar son of Abdul Gani Dar resident of Aglar Kandi, was abducted yesterday afternoon.
Police recovered the bullet ridden body Dar near a passenger shed at Akhal during the night. Police have registered a case in this regard.
Security forces recovered huge cache of arms, ammunition in forest area of Sopore in North Kashmir district of Baramulla last evening.
Police said that following a tip-off, Sopore Police, 32-RR of Army launched a search operation in forest area of Chatoosa, Sopore and recovered one AK 47 short barrel Rifle, three AK 47 magazines, 96 AK 47 rounds, one RPG launcher and 2 UBGL launcher.
Police have registered a case and are conducting investigations.
