Woman sets herself ablaze, dies

JAMMU, Jan 5: A married woman allegedly committed suicide by setting herself on fire at her parental residence in Bishnah area while one person was killed and another injured in separate road mishaps in city outskirts.
According to SHO, police station Bishnah, Inspector Narinder Singh, the woman identified as Rajni Devi (27-28) wife of Mast Ram, a resident of Shekhupura in Bishnah at about 11 this morning set herself on fire by drawing out some kerosene oil from the generator at her parental house at Laswara in Bishnah.
“Seeing the flames, the father of the woman came to rescue her but till then she had been burnt badly. The lady who got 100% burn injuries, was immediately shifted by family members to Government Medical College and Hospital, Jammu for treatment, where she succumbed at about 8 pm during treatment”, the SHO said.
He further said that the woman was living in her parental home since December 17, 2014 for unknown reasons and took this extreme step probably under depression due to some prolonged illness. However, the exact reasons of taking the extreme step would be ascertained after the statement of the family members of the deceased lady, he said, adding the body of the deceased has been shifted to mortuary room of the hospital for post mortem.
We have registered a case in this regard and started investigations under 174 CrPC, the police officer said.
Meanwhile, a 50 year old man identified as Surinder Singh son of Pritam Singh of Purkhoo received serious injuries after a bus bearing registration No JK02AK-6675 hit him near Government College for Women, Gandhi Nagar while crossing the road, this evening. He was immediately shifted to GMCH Jammu for treatment where he succumbed to his injuries while treatment at about 8.15 pm. The body of the deceased has been shifted to mortuary room of the hospital for post mortem. The Gandhi Nagar police has registered a case in this concern and started investigation.
A 50-year old woman namely Bimla Raina wife of Tej Krishen of Jagti in Nagrota also received minor injuries after she fell from a mini-bus while boarding it off at High Court Road in old Janipur area. She was also shifted to GMCH Jammu for treatment. The concerned police has taken cognizance of the matter.
A woman also received injuries in an assault case at her residence in Ranjan area falling under the limits of Gharota police station. According to the preliminary reports, the woman was attacked by some unknown people over some land dispute. The injured woman was rushed by family members to GMCH Jammu for treatment. However, according to concerned SHO, when the investigation officer reached the hospital to record the statement of the victim, she was not present there. Therefore, so far no case has been registered, he added.
