JAMMU, Mar 11: Family members and relatives of a married woman held protest demonstration after she succumbed to her burn injuries at Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) here today.
37-year old Santosh Kumari, wife of Rajesh Gupta of Ramnagar, district Udhampur succumbed to her burn injuries at GMC Hospital today.
After the death of the victim, relatives and family members held protest against her in-laws.
They alleged that her in-laws used to harass her on minor issues and even severally beat her up many times.
They also said that her in-laws poured some inflammable on her and set her ablaze.
The protestors demanded registration of murder case against the in-laws.
As per reports, Santosh Kumari was admitted in GMC hospital on March 8 with severe burn injuries.
She failed to respond to the treatment and succumbed to burn injuries today.
When contacted SDPO Ramnagar Munish Aggarwal said that as per the statement to the police by her in-laws, the woman set herself ablaze by pouring kerosene oil on her after having an altercation with her husband.
The woman’s husband, who is having a chemist shop used to treat her after the incident and when the condition of the victim deteriorated, they approached the police, he added.
On getting information, police party from Ramnagar police station rushed to the spot and found the woman having burn injuries, Mr Aggarwal said.
Police shifted her to Ramnagar hospital and later referred to GMC hospital for advanced treatment, he said, adding that an attempt to suicide case was also registered at Ramnagar police station.
In her statement to police, the victim alleged that her husband poured kerosene on her and set her ablaze during the intervening night of March 7 and 8, SDPO added.
After the statement of the victim, the attempt to suicide case, which was registered earlier, was converted into murder case, he said.
The in-laws used to harass her for dowry or for something else, could not be ruled out till the completion of the investigations, SDPO added.
No arrest had been made till late night.
