SRINAGAR, Aug 28: Director General of Jammu and Kashmir Police Dilbag Singh today said that they won’t allow the peaceful situation in Kashmir to deteriorate in the wake of Taliban take-over of Afghanistan and will act tough against militants and their supporters.
Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of his visit to District Police Lines (DPL) Bandipora, the DGP said: “We won’t allow the prevailing situation to deteriorate in the wake of Taliban’s takeover in Afghanistan”.
On Taliban takeover in Afghanistan and possible infiltration of Taliban militants into Kashmir, he said that they won’t allow the prevailing situation in Kashmir to deteriorate. “Situation at present in Kashmir is peaceful and it will remain so,” he said.
He said that due to the COVID-19 situation, meetings with the police officers had slowed down a bit and now that the Corona graph is going down, the interactions have once again picked up.
“Bandipora is a peaceful area and the situation has improved here,” he said.
Singh said that in the past few weeks many top commanders of various militant outfits were killed in encounters and especially the killing of TRF chief Abbas Sheikh and his aide Saqib in Srinagar encounter. “With these killing, people have heaved a sigh of relief”, he added.
“Abbas and his associate were involved in so many terror activities. After their killing, people are feeling relieved,” the DGP said, and added that similarly in other districts of Kashmir, the situation is peaceful and people are enjoying the peaceful atmosphere.
About the growing number of militant supporters in Kashmir, Singh said that police will act strictly against militants and militant supporters including OGWs. “It is the OGWs who carry a pistol to do selective killing and throw grenades to target innocent civilians. We are going very tough against them,” he said.
On the OGWs arrested in North Kashmir, the DGP said that police and security forces continued their operation against them. “We try to take the toughest possible action against those who are going against peace and law. We recently arrested some OGW’s in Handwara with weapons and it is clear that strict action will be taken against anyone who wants to create an atmosphere of terrorism here”, he added.
The DGP along with IGP Kashmir Vijay Kumar visited Bandipora and held security review meeting with officers of police, Army and Central Armed Forces.
