Wool sector has lot of potential for employment generation: Dr Khajuria

NEW DELHI, June 21: Dr Romesh Khajuria, Chairman, Wool & Woollens Export Promotion Council (WWEPC) and Carpet Export Promotion Council (CEPC), Ministry of Textiles, Government of India stated that Wool Sector has lot of potential to generate employment opportunities in the country.
He said this while speaking during his presentation in Vanijya Bhawan, here, today in front of Union Minister of Textiles, Giriraj Singh. An interaction with Export Promotion Council (EPC) was organised by Ministry of Textiles (MoT). Minister of State for Textiles and External Affairs Pabitra Marghertia along with Ms Rachna Shah, Secretary Textiles, Rohit Kansal, Additional Secretary MoT and Trade Advisor along with other senior officers of MoT were also present during the interaction programme.
While speaking on the occasion, Dr Khajuria emphasised to enhance the production of wool in India. He further said that Woollen products manufacturing industry in India needs 1,20,000 tons of wool for manufacturing annually and during 2023-24 India produced only about 33,000 tons of raw wool rest about 86,000 tons of raw wool was imported from other countries. He further elaborated that India can produce more raw wool while establishing organised sheep farms about 15 lakh employment opportunities can be created by 2029-30 in woollen sector.
Dr Khajuria also highlighted need of creating processing infrastructure for value addition.
