JAMMU, Sept 15: Describing the engineers as architects of nation building and lauding their role in development of any country, Minister for PHE Irrigation and Flood Control Taj Mohi-ud-Din today asked the members of this fraternity to work for improving their image today in the society.
Addressing the large gathering of engineers on the occasion of 45th Engineers Day celebration at the Institution of Engineers, Jammu Local Centre here today, Mr Taj said without engineers, the development of any country is not possible. He said engineers are the real architects of any nation and they should follow the footsteps of the great engineer Sir M Visvesvaraya.
Mr Taj further said the engineers have to shift their focus from mere supervision to the application of their knowledge in the field to fulfill their responsibilities and strengthen the faith in their profession. Unfortunately, for every project they now have development a habit for going for consultancy instead of applying their own mind and using potential in design-works. They have limited their role as mere supervisors. They should have to come out of it. At the same time, the Minister suggested the members of this fraternity to improve the image in society as due to increasing menace of `commission’ their image has been affected.
Commenting on the J&K Water Resources Act, Mr Taj while lauding the role of former chief engineer, V K Abrol said, with the `engineering vision’ and first experiment of its kind, the State was able to generate a revenue of Rs 1000 crores per year. The Act was proved as revolutionary legislation towards the economic development of the State. He said the engineers have to play an important role in conceptualizing the techno-economic merits of the projects and ensure their proper implementation.
Earlier, Chairman of IE, Jammu Local Centre, B B Sharma while paying tributes to the great engineer, Sir M Visvesvaraya, gave a resume of the history and objectives of Institution of Engineers. He also projected the problems and demands of the engineers including stagnation (regularisation) and pay anomalies.
Executive Director Chenab Valley Power Project, S K Raina spoke on the life history and contribution of Sir Visvesvariya.
Several engineers were honoured on their occasion. They included B L Rawal, S C Thukral, P K Nanda, S K Pandita, Ashok Kumar Sharma, Sewa Ram and Rajesh Kumar Angural. It was followed by technical session chaired by senior engineer from Northern Railways, B D Garg.
