Work on Kiru Power Project to formally begin today

JAMMU, June 16: The work on much talked about 624 mw Kiru Hydro Electric Project to be constructed on river Chenab in Kishtwar district of Jammu region will formally start tomorrow.
The Project is a joint venture of Chenab Valley Power Projects Private Ltd (CVPPPL), NHPC and Power Trading Corporation (PTC). While CVPPPL and NHPC has a share of 49 percent each in the project PTC will have two percent share in the project which will be constructed at an estimated cost of Rs 4287 crore, A K Pathak, General Manager Contracts, told Excelsior.
The Project which will be constructed on river Chenab at Pathar Nikki village 45 kms from Kishtwar town will have 135 meters high concrete Gravity Dam and four numbers 5.7 meter dia circular shaped pressure shafts. The project will have an underground Power House and Tale Race tunnels.
The CVPPPL signed contracts for execution of the Civil package of the project with M/s Patel Engineering Ltd here yesterday for the construction of Diversion Tunnel, Concrete gravity Dam, Intake pressure shafts, underground Power House and Tale Race Tunnels.
The total package of contract with M/s Patel Engineering Ltd will be valued at Rs 2240.27 crore, as per contract. Pathak said the contracts were allotted three months back but the work could not be started due to lockdown which was enforced after the Corona Virus gripped the country. Now the agreement was signed yesterday and the engineers of the company will reach the site tomorrow to formally start the work on the Project.
The completion time of the project is 54 months while the completion time given to company for civil works is 50 months, he added.
The project will have four units with 156 mw each. The project will also provide employment to local people as over 600 to 700 labourers will be engaged on the project, he said.
Earlier, Contracts for Supply Erection Testing & Commissioning of Hydro Mechanical Work Packages of this project was signed on June 11, this year with M/s PES Engineers Pvt Ltd. at a value of Rs. 202.10 crore.
The project will be constructed on Chenab River in district Kishtwar and will have 135 mtrs high Concrete Gravity Dam and four 5.7 meter Dia Circular Shaped Pressure Shafts. It will generate 2272 MU of electricity in 90% dependable year.
It may be recalled that Keri will be another giant power project in Kishtwar district after Paccal Dhool and Rattle which is also a joint venture of NHPC and CVPPPL. The construction of the two projects will augment the power generation in J&K. Kiru is the fourth power project to be constructed in Kishtwar district after Dul-Hasti, Rattle and Paccal -Dhool.
The Dul Hasti has a capacity of generating 390 mw of electricity while Rattle has a capacity of generating 850 mw power.
