SRINAGAR, May 23: Child Nodal Center, IMHANS held a one day workshop at Kashmir Law College, Nowshehra on the topic “Mental Health as a Basic Human Right”.
The workshop was initiated by an opening speech by Nazir Ahmad Thakur who addressed the audience on the importance of understanding mental health issues and its bearing on the physical health. He mentioned that the rights of a person suffering through a mental illness need to be upheld as basic human rights of any other person.
The guest of honor for the occasion was Nazir Ahmad Thakur- Secretary- State Human Rights Commission (SHRC).
It was followed by a presentation by Muzamil Wagay (Coordinator- CNC) on various mental health problems, their causes, symptoms and the current scenario of mental health illnesses in the valley was also deliberated on.
Adil Fayaz Wadoo (Coordinator- CNC) briefed the audience about the functioning of the Child Nodal Center, its objectives, the staff, services provided and the statistics of patients catered so far for various mental health issues.
Syed Mujtaba (Lawyer- CNC) deliberated on Mental Health Care Act, 2017 particularly focusing on the various rights of a person suffering from mental health illness. He also deliberated on the rights of persons with Disabilities Act, 2018. The Key United Nation Treaties pertaining to Human Rights were also discussed in detail during the workshop.
Prof. M. Afzal Qadri – Principal. Kashmir Law College-Nowshehra Srinagar thanked the resource persons and organizers of the workshop for conducting such an important session with the students and faculty of the college. Further he maintained that law students can be the best ambassadors of promotion and protection of mental health rights of deserving sections of the society.
