JAMMU, Dec 1: The ‘World AIDS Day’ celebrated enthusiastically across the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir by various departments and education institutions by holding different activities to spread awareness about the deadly disease, here today.
Institute of Management Sciences Jammu in collaboration with HDFC Bank, Red Cross and GMC Jammu organized a blood donation drive to observe the Day. The drive was arranged to remind each one of us that the need for blood is universal, but access to blood for all those who need it is not.
The event commenced with Gurpreet Singh (Cluster Head operations, HDFC Narwal) presenting the bouquet of flowers to Dr Meenakshi Sharma (Director IMS). The students and faculty of IMS College enthusiastically lined up to donate blood for the betterment of society.
A day-long program on World AIDS Day was today conducted at the Auditorium of Government Medical College Srinagar, which was organised by the Department of Community Medicine, Government Medical College Srinagar in collaboration with JK AIDS Control Society.
Dr S. Muhammad Salim Khan, HoD Community Medicine gave the keynote address on the 25th World AIDS Day, while Dr Masood Tanvir, Principal, GMC Srinagar while inaugurating the CME cum seminar emphasised wider awareness among all stakeholders keeping in view the escalation of cases of Hepatitis among high-risk individuals and groups.
Govt Hospital Gandhi Nagar Jammu celebrated the Day by holding the function under the guidance of Secretary Health and Medical Education Bhupinder Kumar, wherein Dr Saleem-Ur-Rehman, DG, FW, MCH and Immunization and Director Health Services Jammu was the chief guest Medical Superintendent Dr Parveen Yograj was also present. A poster making competition was organised wherein more than 50 students of various ANMT schools participated.
J&K Society for Promotion of Youth & Masses (JKSPYM) organized a series of events to observe the Day including a rally which was flagged off by Project Director, J&K State AIDS Control Society, Dr Sameer Maroon. More than 100 students of Rajeev Gandhi College of Nursing participated in a rally which started from Kala Kendra while passing through Bhagwati Nagar Bridge and finally finished at Rajinder Park Canal Road.
The NSS unit of Maulana Azad Memorial College under the patronage of College Principal Prof GS Rakwal organized a poster making competition on Day to raise awareness about HIV/AIDS and demonstrate international solidarity in the face of the pandemic. The volunteers made posters on the theme of this year ‘Rock the Ribbon’.
Department of Psychology, Government General Zorawar Singh Memorial Degree College, Reasi, under the leadership of Principal, Dr Kulvinder Kour, in collaboration with Chief Medical Officer and District Hospital Reasi organized an awareness program on AIDS.
In charge Principal, Prof Samriti Aggarwal was the chief-guest of the event. The resource persons of the event were Dr Minali Rajput and Dr Bilal Ahmed Wani from District Hospital Reasi. Dr Rajinder Kumar, Assistant Professor delivered the welcome address.
Dr Menali Rajput made deliberations on practical approach required among youth for prevention of AIDS while as Dr Bilal Ahmed Wani made students aware about the interventions required to move toward a nation with zero AIDS. Mahima, a student of 5th semester, Department of Psychology also made students aware about the ways of preventing AIDS.
The program was successfully organized by the Department of Psychology under the supervision of its Head Dr Probhjot Kour, Dr Rajinder Kumar, Dr Sakshi and Dr Mudasir. Dr Sakshi, Dr Sandeepa, Dr Saleem Ahmed and Dr Mukesh Kumar were among those who attended the programme.
NSS unit of Dogra College of Education organized an awareness lecture on the topic “Transmission and Prevention of HIV/AIDS ‘’ in the premises of Govt High School Bhatyari, Bishnah. The resource person was Dr Rohit Kumar, Medical Officer, Govt Hospital Bishnah. The lecture began with the formal welcome address given by Arushi Jaral, student of B.Ed and she spoke that AIDS is a life threatening condition caused by HIV.
KC College of Education organized an extension lecture on ‘Aids Prevention: My Health, My Right’ to mark the Day which is observed to extend support to those who have to live with this life-threatening condition caused by humans. The programme started with a welcome and bouquet presentation to the resource person Dr Kamini Saini, Medical Officer, AYUSH Dispensary, Channi Himmat.
The Day was also observed by Govt Degree College Thannamandi in collaboration with Red Ribbon Club and Department of Zoology under the patronage of College Principal Prof Farooq Ahmed. At the outset Prof Muhammad Shoket NSS Programme Officer briefed the participants about the importance of the Day and this year’s theme.
A symposium was held in connection with the observance of ‘World Aids Day’ at GDC Khour under this year‘s theme “Equalize Achieving Equity to end HIV” wherein students expressed their views on the event.
Red Ribbon Club of GDC Vijaypur in collaboration with J&K AIDS Control Society and Higher Education Department J&K organized a series of activities including ‘poster making competition’, ‘pangoli competition’, ‘extempore’ and ‘short story’ on the theme of this year.
The programme started with the welcome address by Prof Poonam Kundan (convener Red Ribbon Club) where she briefed the participants regarding a series of activities.
The Day was also observed by the Red Ribbon Club of GDC Nowshera by holding a couple of activities in collaboration with J&K AIDS Control Society, Department of Health & Medical Education and Higher Education wherein Dr KK Sharma, College Principal was the chief guest. The programme started with a welcome address by Prof. Pooja Devi, Nodal Officer, Red Ribbon Club.
Shaheed Ghanisham GDC Doongi organised different activities such as rangoli making competition, speech making competition and skit to celebrate the Day and enlightened the students about the disease and the advances that have been made for the treatment of this disease till now.
The NSS wing of Chenab College of Education celebrated the Day with an objective to create awareness among the students about the symptoms, causes and prevention of HIV / AIDS that has taken an unprecedented number of lives. The programme consisted of speeches and slogan recitation by the students on the theme of this “Rock the Ribbon” and discussion was also done on HIV.
The Day was also commemorated by Red Ribbon Club of GDC RS Pura in collaboration with J&K AIDS Control Society (JKACS), H&ME department under the aegis of IQAC wherein a poster making competition on the theme ‘Equalize: Achieving equality to End HIV’ was organised under the guidance of College Principal Prof Sunil Uppal.
Three days workshop in connection with the Day was organised by Red Ribbon Club (RRC), Govt. Degree College Ramnagar. The programme was commenced by Prof Ritika Mahajan (Convenor RRC) followed by Dr Udhey Bhanu, College Principal addressed the gathering and stressed on the necessary preventive action to be taken for combating AIDS.
GDC Jourian organized an awareness program which was organized by the Red Ribbon Club of the College in collaboration with Red Cross Society of India. Various events including; Reel Making and Poster Making were conducted in the College premises and the College Principal Dr Anuradha Pandoh talked in detail about HIV and its preventive measures.
GDC Mahanpur under the supervision of College Principal, Dr Sangeeta Sudan observed the Day in collaboration with Red Ribbon Club, NSS and Bharat Scout and Guide unit of the College. An interactive talk was delivered by Dr Muddasir  Arif, Medical Officer, Trauma Centre Mahanpur to educate the students about HIV infection/ AIDS  and its protective measures.
Trikuta Degree College Nardni-Raipur organized an awareness rally in the Village Bajwa Nardni in collaboration with the NSS unit of the College, wherein the students interacted with the local people during the rally. Suman Sharma, Chairperson of the College was the chief guest and flagged off the rally.
GLDM Degree College Hiranagar held poster making competition, symposium and an awareness rally to observe the Day in collaboration with Red Ribbon Club & Eco-Club of the College. Students enthusiastically participated in all the events to raise awareness of the AIDS caused by the spread of HIV infection. College Principal Dr Pragyakhanna in her message asked the students to stay alert, active and notice and record everything around.
College Principal Dr Sanjay Tickoo lauded the knowledge shared by the resource person on this deadly disease and said that awareness is an important way to prevent AIDS.
Syed Mantaqui Memorial College of Nursing and Medical Technology, IUST organized a programme commemorating the Day. The event conducted under the theme “Equalize: Achieving equality to ending HIV” was organized in collaboration Jammu & Kashmir Aids Control Society, Department of Health and Medical Education J&K Govt, Jammu and Kashmir Paramedical & Nursing Council, Directorate of Internal Quality Assurance IUST, Govt. Polytechnic College Awantipora and Mantaqui Centre for Science and Society, IUST.
The Day was also celebrated by the Red Ribbon Club of GDC Kilhotran by holding an extempore session along with a detailed lecture. The whole event was organised under overall patronage of the College Principal Dr Javid Iqbal Zargar, wherein the resource person for the event was Dr Wahied Khanwar Balwan, HOD Zoology at GDC Kilhotran.
The Red Ribbon Club of Govt Polytechnic Bikram Chowk in collaboration with J&K State AIDS Control Society organized a poster making competition in the institution to commemorate the Day, wherein more than 50 students participated with great zeal and enthusiasm and expressed their thoughts through posters.
The Day was observed at GDC Akhnoor under the patronage of College Principal Prof Surinder Singh Parihar. The proceedings of the programme started with the welcome address of College Principal and other dignitaries by Prof DN Sharma, convener of the Red Ribbon Club of the College and organised poster making and rangoli making competitions.
The students of B.Sc Nursing 1st year students of Government Nursing College Gandhi Nagar observed the Day with great enthusiasm under the guidance of Poonam Paul, Assistant Professor by holding poster making competition. The competition was judged by officials of J&K Aids Control Society, HM&E Department.
Little Flowers School conducted an AIDS awareness rally in Sainik Colony to mark the Day wherein Principal Kusum Rattanpal flagged off the rally from the School premises. The participants spread a message over the deadly disease by holding placards throughout the route.
Red Ribbon Club of Government College of Education Jammu organized series of competitions to mark World AIDS Day under the guidance of Principal Prof Aketa Gupta and Convener of the Club Dr Radhika Mahajan.
Prof Anju Bala, Dr Jyoti Parihar and Prof Anuradha Choudhary were the judges. In poster making competition the first prize was secured by Komal Sharma of B.Ed Semester 3rd, the second prize was bagged by Akriti Jasrotia and the third prize was shared by Shallu Khajuria of M. Ed Semester 3rd and Arushi Sharma of B Ed Semester 3rd.
In reel competition the first position was awarded to Shallu Khajuria and second & third prizes were given to Mehak Sardalia and Akriti Jasrotia respectively. In speech competition Monali secured first position, the second position was bagged by Arushi Sharma and the third position was secured by Shiveta Sharma. Cash prizes were awarded to the winners and certificates were given to all the participants.
