JAMMU, Nov 25: World Antibiotic Awareness Week (WAAW) was celebrated in Government Medical College (GMC) Jammu.
During the week long programme, which started on November 18 and concluded on November 24, various activities were conducted by the MBBS and post-graduate students as well as faculty members of various departments, particularly the clinical departments dealing with patient care and Department of Pharmacology and Department of Microbiology in particular.
WAAW is celebrated every year under the umbrella of WHO by medical colleges, Governments hospitals, health facilities, schools and communities across the globe. The campaign highlights best practices among the general public, health workers and policy makers to help stop the further emergence and spread of antibiotic resistance.
Dr Sunanda Raina, Principal and Dean, GMC Jammu in her address said, “Antibiotics Resistance is a global problem and this region and our hospitals are also not an exception to this. Antibiotics Resistance is projected to be the leading cause of death worldwide and septicemia due to AMR is going to be take over as first cause of death over Cardio-vascular related death at present. If this issue is not addressed by one and all the time is going to come that even minor infection are going to prove fatal”.
Dr Shashi Sudan, Prof and Head, Department of Microbiology, GMC Jammu and Dr Vishal Tandon, Associate Professor, Department of Pharmacology, GMC Jammu delivered lectures and stressed upon the importance of Hand hygiene, Hospital cleanliness, effective Bio-medical Waste Management, rational use of antibiotics, effective drug regulatory system.
