JAMMU, June 14: World Blood Donor Day was observed across the State with gaiety and fervour.
World Blood Donor Day was marked at Red Cross Bhawan, Jammu by Government Medical College in collaboration with J&K AIDS Prevention and Control Society and ISBTI J&K Chapter to commemorate the birth anniversary of Dr Karl Landsteiner the founder of ABO Blood grouping system and noble prize winner, here today.
Dr Shashi Gupta, Principal, Government Medical College, Jammu was the chief guest who appealed the youth to come forward and join hands with Red Cross to strengthen the movement of voluntary blood donation and ensure the availability of blood in the blood bank.
Anil K Padha, Secretary, Regional Red Cross Society, Jammu presented the welcome address and suggested that blood banks should orgainse motivational programmes at High Secondary School level so as the youth will come forward to donate blood at the age of 18.
Ajit Singh, Zonal Head Sant Niranjkari Mission, Jammu, also spoke on the occasion, besides Dr TR Raina, former HOD Blood Transfusion Department, Government Medical College, Jammu explained the technologies of blood Transfusion.
At the end, vote of thanks was presented by Dr Meena Sidhu, incharge Blood Bank SMGS Hospital, where as the stage was conducted by Lalit Sharma.
Later Principal, Government Medical College, Jammu presented awards to the bloods donors and organizations which have contributed to the cause of voluntary blood donation in Jammu.
To observe World Blood Donors Day, IRCS J&K State in collaboration with SKIMS organised a blood donation camp at General Post Office, Srinagar, in which the postal department employees including Chief Post Master General, John Samuel donated blood. The camp was inaugurated by Shabir Hussain, a Red Cross volunteer.
Roma Wani, general secretary, IRCS J&K State released and presented special posters on World Blood Donor Day to the Chief Post Master General John Samuel and Dr Fehmeeda, HoD Blood Bank, SKIMS. The posters highlighted the importance of blood to humanity.
Another blood donation camp was held at Red Cross House which was inaugurated by Abdul Majeed Gamgeen, a Red Cross volunteer.
New Young Blood Organization (NYBO) volunteers led by its president Ashok Verma distributed eatables among the inmates of the Old Age Home at Ambphalla to observe World Blood Donors Day.
