World Blood Donor Day observed across J&K

*Bali urges youth to volunteer for noble cause

JAMMU, June 14: A number of functions including blood donation camps were organized today across J&K to observe World Blood Donor Day.
In this connection, a mega function was organized today by J&K State AIDS Control Society (JKSACS) in collaboration with PG Department of Blood Transfusion Medicine GMC, Jammu and Indian Red Cross Society, Jammu in the Auditorium of Government Medical College Jammu. Chief guest of the function was Bali Bhagat, Minister for Health & Medical Education while Dr Sunanda Raina, Principal GMC Jammu, was the guest of honour.
At the onset, Bali Bhagat inaugurated a voluntary blood donation campaign and also released balloons to mark the significance of the day. Speaking on the occasion, Bhagat emphasized the need for gearing up World Blood Donor Campaign to meet the need for sufficient blood in the blood banks functional in J&K. Dr Mushtaq Ahmed Rather, Project Director, JKSACS highlighted the theme for this years’ World Blood Donor Day and appealed the masses to come forward for donating blood voluntarily.
As a token of appreciation of their commitment towards the cause of blood donation, mementoes were presented to the dignitaries on behalf of JKSACS. Mementoes and certificates were also distributed among the regular voluntary blood donors, which include Dr Kiran Sharma (Police Hospital) who donated blood for 51st time and Ajit Singh of Nirankari Mission.
Young Blood Association and Indian Society for Blood Transfusion and Immunohematology in collaboration with National Human Rights today organized a function to honour the voluntary blood donors on the occasion of World Blood Donors Day.
Minister for Forests, Ecology and Environment, Choudhary Lal Singh, who was the chief guest, while addressing the gathering, appealed the people to come forward and donate blood for saving the precious lives. He said blood donations promote comrade and brotherhood. Later, the Minister also presented appreciation certificates to 33 voluntary blood donors and motivators of various social organizations.
Red Cross J&K celebrated World Blood Donor day at Srinagar in collaboration with School Education Department. The main function which was presided over by Shafi Rather, General Secretary, Indian Red Cross Society took place at Kothi Bagh Girls Higher Secondary Srinagar.
Dr GN Itoo, Director School Education was the chief guest while Mohammad Salman Qazi, Director, News Doordarshan, was guest of honour. A number of people including heads of the Educational institutions, teachers, students and Red Cross volunteers participated in the function. At least 16 leading blood donors of the Valley were felicitated by State Red Cross Society.
World Blood Donor Day was celebrated at Blood Bank of Government Hospital, Gandhi Nagar, Jammu. Many members of social organizations, other volunteers and few staff members of hospital donated blood on the occasion. A symposium was held during which many charts related to Blood donation were prepared by students of various nursing training institutes. Dr Madhuri Slathia, Medical Superintendent, along with Dr Arun Sharma, Deputy Medical Superintendent, was also present.
In connection with World Blood Donor Day, Lords Inn Jammu (a unit of Grand Plaza Hotel Private Limited) organized a blood donation camp inside the hotel with the active cooperation of ASCOMS Blood Bank and Drug Control Department, J&K. On the occasion, staff and guests of the hotel donated blood voluntarily.
A function to mark World Blood Donor Day was also organized by Health Department of Block Darhal. Civil dignitaries, school teachers, NGOs, political and social leaders, and a few voluntary donors of the area were present in the function, during which, BMO Darhal, Dr Iqbal Malik, gave a power point presentation to clear the myth that donating blood weakens our body.
District Hospital Udhampur in collaboration with District Red Cross Society today observed ‘World Blood Donor Day at District Hospital. While highlighting the importance of the day, the chief guest, Dr Narinder Bhatial, Medical Superintendent, said that the main objective of celebrating the day is to extend thanks to all those people who have donated their blood voluntarily. Students of ANMT School presented ‘Nukad Natak’ besides a large number of volunteers donated their blood on the occasion.
To create awareness about the importance of voluntary blood donation and felicitate voluntary blood donors, World Blood Donor Day was celebrated today under the supervision of District Development Commissioner, Dr Shahid Iqbal Choudhary at District Hospital Rajouri. SSP Rajouri, Yugal Manhas, inaugurated the blood donation camp, organized jointly by IRCS Rajouri, Army and Department of Health and Family Welfare Rajouri. 33 units of blood were collected in the camp.
Ascension-a step towards humanity, an NGO organized a 4-day blood donation camp at Blood Bank, GMC Jammu, which concluded today on World Blood Donor Day. During the camp, volunteers of the NGO donated blood to the needy patients and also to the Blood Bank of the Hospital.
Ranjit College of Education observed World Blood Donor Day by organizing a lecture to aware the students for the need for safe blood and blood products and to motivate the students to donate blood. Principal, Dr Renu Gangal, motivated the students to donate blood. All the students also pledged to donate the blood.
