JAMMU, Feb 3: The World Cancer Day was observed today by several health institutions as well as NGOs across Jammu and Kashmir.

American Oncology Institute (AOI), Jammu in association with Police Hospital Jammu organized a free cancer screening and awareness camp at DPL Jammu. RR Swain, Director General of Police J&K) inaugurated the camp along with A K Choudhary (Special DG Crime J&K), M K Sinha (ADGP HQRS/Coordination PHQ J&K), Bhim Sen Tuti, (IGP HQRS/Tech PHQ J&K) and Meenakshi Kotwal, Medical Superintendent of Police Hospital Jammu. In the cancer screening camp, more than 400 patients were screened and examined by Dr Deepak Abrol (Senior Consultant, Radiation Oncology), Dr Satyanker Gupta (Senior Consultant, Medical Oncology) and Dr Surbhi Kudyar (Associate Consultant, Breast Oncology) from AOI Jammu.
Those present at the camp were members from We Care Welfare Society, Rotary Inner Wheel Club and Jandyal Sabha. Dr Neeraj Bishnoi (Regional COO, AOI) and Rayhan Hussaini (Facility Director, AOI Jammu) along with the Marketing, Nursing and Medical team of AOI Jammu were also present. AOI and World Cancer Care team offered free tests and services like Mammography, Bone Densitometry, Pap Smear, PSA, and other lab tests along with free oncology and general consultation at the camp.
The State Cancer Institute (SCI) Jammu observed World Cancer Day and celebrated its first Foundation Day by organizing different awareness programmes like poster making competition, awareness lectures and skits in the Hospital premises under the overall supervision of Medical Superintendent of the Hospital, Dr Deepak Kumar. Principal and Dean, Government Medical College and Hospital, Jammu (GMC&H), Dr Ashutosh Gupta was the chief guest on the occasion. Dr AS Bhatia (Principal, GMC-Rajouri) and senior faculty members of GMC Jammu were also present on the occasion.
The highlight of the day was the sixteen cancer survivors, who defeated cancer and are living normal life now. They were invited by the State Cancer Institute to give message to the people that ‘Cancer can be defeated’. The survivors also shared their experience and said that cancer can be defeated with will power. Earlier in the morning, NGO Support in collaboration with SCI Jammu organized ‘Can-Walk’ in which the around 300 students from AMT School, doctors of SCI Jammu, besides members and volunteers of NGO Support participated with full enthusiasm. The awareness walk passed through different areas of the SCI Jammu, Super Specialty Hospital and GMC Jammu.
Rajiv Gandhi College of Nursing (RGCN), Chak Bhalwal (Jammu) organized awareness programme on cancer under the theme “Close The Care Gap” in collaboration with Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Superspeciality Narayana Hospital, Katra at their campus, Chak Bhalwal. All Nursing students as well as faculty actively participated and updated their knowledge regarding cancer and its early stages detection. The programme started with lamp lightening ceremony performed by Dr Rajpal Singh, Senior Consultant, Oncology Department of SMVD Narayana Hospital, M S Katoch (Chairman RGCN) and Anjana Bavouria (Director RGCN).
The programme was conducted with great enthusiasm by conducting awareness session by Dr Rajpal Singh, regarding cancer cells, precipitating factors & early detection of the disease and HPV vaccinations. M S Katoch explained the role and responsibility of Nursing students in awareness and fighting against this deadly disease while Anjana Bavouria emphasized how such awareness program is crucial element in the chain of saving lives.
