World Cancer Day observed at GMC, MDH

JAMMU, Feb 4: World Cancer Day was today observed by the Regional Cancer Centre (RRC), GMC Jammu by organizing a patient/public awareness programme in the premises of the Regional Cancer Center in association with Department of Nutrition.
Professor Ashutosh Gupta, head of the Centre stressed upon the need to make the public aware about prevention and early diagnosis of the disease. He said that that cancer being a lifestyle disease is preventable if certain changes are incorporated the daily life of the individuals.
“Use of Tobacco has to be totally stopped in all forms be it smoking, chewing, eating in paan etc. Daily exercise is must. Addition of vegetables, fruits as anti oxidants are must for all individuals”, he added.
Dr Sandeep Kaur, consultant in RCC, gave an exhaustive review on common cancers, their symptoms, warning signs while Dr Gagandeep spoke about the need for self breast examination in ladies for early diagnosis of breast cancer.
Dr Vasantha Kohli, head of Department of Nutrition, spoke about the need for changes in daily diet including right amount of proteins, carbohydrates and fats for cancer prevention.
Dr Ashutosh Gupta presented the future plans for the expansion of the RCC. He disclosed that the Government of India had recently sanctioned a grant of Rs 120 crores for construction of new cancer institute in Jammu.
Dr Annil Mahajan, HoD Medicine, was guest of honour.
Meanwhile, under the aegis of UICC Geneva, Radiations of Hope in association with Maharishi Dayanand Hospital and MRC commemorated World Cancer Day in innovative way.
Activities started on February 1 with a cross-sectional population based epidemiological prospective study on premalignant symptomatology. On February 2, a live phone in radio talk was organized in which Dr Deepak Abrol gave answers to various cancer related queries. A unique environment cleanliness drive with Mission Clean India Cancer Free India was held near New Nandini Tunnel where people from all walks of life joined in.
The event was acknowledged and supported by Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University, J&K Dharmarth Trust, J&K Arya Pratinidhi Sabha, AFCONS Infrastructure Pvt Ltd and various other organizations.
A Colloquium first of its kind on Managing Cancer Involving all stake holders was organized where Dr Deepak Abrol founder of group Radiations of Hope gave a presentation on importance and history of world cancer day. Dr Rahul Sharma Associate Prof and Head of unit RCC Jammu gave a detailed presentation on Cancer Awareness.
A very well informative interactive discussion was also held in which Major General RS Jamwal (president, Dharmarth Trust), Dr Dinesh Kumar (HoD community medicine GMC) and others were panelists. The discussion was moderated by Dr Deepak Abrol. Vote of thanks was presented by Event Co-ordinator, Sandeep Mengi. The event was honoured by presence of Dr Altaf Wani, Divison, Head Radiation Biology, OHIO, USA.
LBN slate of honour for outstanding services to the society was presented to Dr Ghanshyam Dev Gupta, Principal, GMC Jammu who along with Director Health Services Jammu was the guest of honour.
