JAMMU, Nov 14: World Diabetes Day has been observed across the State.
To observe World Diabetes Day, a free diabetes detection and retinopathy camp was held at Jammu Diabetes and Thyriod Care Centre, Valmiki Chowk, Gandhi Nagar. A total of 54 persons were screened for diabetes and 18 patients were undertaken for retinopathy detection under the guidance of Dr Raj Kumar Sharma, a Noted Diabetologist of Jammu. On the occasion, Dr Raj Kumar Sharma discussed various aspects in the management of diabetes with the patients. He advised about the importance of meticulalous control of blood sugar by regular exercise, balanced diet and proper medication under the supervision of the Diabetologist, which can go long way to prevent the long term complications like Nephropathy, Retinopathy and Neuropathy. Since there is no magical cure for diabetes, patient should avoid adopting illogical and self medication, he added.
To create awareness amongst masses about diabetes, get them diagnosed and then explain preventive measures to stay healthy BJP Chief and MLA Jammu West Sat Sharma joined by BJP Vice-President Yudhvir Sethi today inaugurated a medical camp on the occasion of World Diabetes Day. The camp organized by SRL Ranbaxy through Patient Care Centre Bakshi Nagar, Jammu in OPD of medicine department of Government Medical College, Jammu screened hundreds of patients and made them aware of diabetes and its prevention. Dr SK Bali, Dr Vijay Kundal, Dr Rakesh Sharma, Dr Sanjay Mahajan, Dr Rajneesh Atri and Dr Anil Salathia, Ajay Sharma, Rajesh Dogra, Vishal Kohli, Swarn Singh, Ramesh Gupta, Atul Bakshi, Sandeep Singh, Karun Aggarwal and many others were present on the occasion.
To observe World Diabetes Day, Indian Red Cross Society, Jammu Region organized a free diabetes detection-cum-awareness camp at Canal Road Walkway, Jammu for checkup of sugar fasting of the morning walkers. More than 120 people of all walks of life got their sugar fasting tested and were also made aware about their life style and dietary habits for the alarming rise of diabetic population and patients by the senior doctors and technicians of Indian Red Cross Society, Jammu Region, Jammu.
Directorate of Health Services Kashmir (DHSK) observed World Diabetes Day Special focus was given among women folk in today’s event across Kashmir Division. On this day, various hospitals along with historic Clock tower (Ganta Ghar) at Lal chowk, Srinagar was illuminated in blue light in order to create awareness among masses about the importance of the day and the disease. Directorate of Health Services, Kashmir organized screening camps across various health institutions including District Hospitals, Sub District Hospitals and various Primary Health Centers along. A total of over 8000 persons were screened across Kashmir Division, out of which, 571 new cases of suspected diabetes were found who have been advised to consult NCD District Cells in major health institutions for proper follow-up. Apart from screening of diabetes using glucometers, IEC activities were also conducted on this day which included distribution of pamphlets among people on diabetes care and person to person interaction.
On the occasion of World Diabetes Day, Department of Endocrinology, SKIMS in collaboration with Department of Community Medicine and M P PCOS Society organized a day long programme at SKIMS auditorium with an aim to enhance awareness about diabetes among common masses. In addition participants from SKIMS Nursing College, Central university of Kashmir, Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences, University of Kashmir and members of civil society attended the programmme. Besides, diabetic patients, staff from SKIMS, Estates Department, Electric Department, Photography Section and research scholars from various departments attended the programme. A large number of women participants also attended the programme that included a series of lectures delivered by eminent experts in the field besides a panel discussion, a quiz, a public interaction and addresses by distinguished guests. On the occasion, The Journal of Medical Missive published by Dr Abdul Majid Siraj and edited by Dr M Ashraf Ganie and Dr M Ishaq Geer was released apart from the inaugural issue of the 2nd JK Medical Science Congress, M P PCOS Society Newsletter by the eminent Gastroenterologist of the Valley, Prof M. Sultan Khuroo and Dr Altaf R Kirmani, Dean Medical Faculty, SKIMS. Lectures on various issues were delivered by Dr M Ashraf Ganie, Dr Shariq R Masoodi, Dr Bashir A Laway, Dr Bashir Ahmad Sanai, Dr Tariq Ahmad Qureshi, Dr Muzafar Maqsood and Dr Khalid Mohi-ud-Din. About 250 participants were screened for diabetes, hypertension, obesity and PCOS. The panelist for the panel discussion included Prof MS Khuroo, Dr Reyaz Ahmed Untoo, Dr M Ashraf Bhat, Dr M Maqbool Wani, Dr Arshid Iqbal Wani, Dr Fayaz Ahmad Nikka, Dr Imtiyaz and Sakeena Akhter. Various aspects of diabetes were discussed during various sessions. The participants were given certificates of participation and the awards were given for best questions during the public interaction. A quiz competition was also held and awards were distributed. Prof AR Kirmani, Dean Medical Faculty SKIMS and Prof Syed Amin Tabish, Medical Superintendent SKIMS also addressed the gathering. Prof MS Khuroo, moderator and chief guest suggested major change in the society to curb the burden of diabetes. Organizing secretary of the programme, Dr M Ashraf Ganie presented the inaugural and valedictory address.
