World Earth Day observed by educational institutions across J&K

JAMMU, Apr 23: World Earth Day was observed today by various educational institutions across Jammu and Kashmir.
To mark the occasion, School of Life Sciences and Department of Chemistry, Central University of Kashmir (CUK) organized a workshop on the theme “Planet vs Plastics” at Science campus-Nunar. Speaking on the occasion, Dr Chinnappan Baskar (HoD Chemistry) emphasized on protecting the earth from hazardous pollution. Prof Abid Hamid Dar (Dean, School of Life Sciences and HoD Biotechnology) described plastic pollution as another major threat to the planet earth. Faculty members, Dr M Lateef Khaliq, Dr Rafiq Lone, Dr Rakeeb Ahmad Mir and Dr Shahbaz Ahmad Lone deliberated on the different aspects of impact of plastic pollution on plant and animal health.
MIER College of Education marked World Earth Day with an inter-college symposium on the theme “The Impact of Over Tourism on the Environment.” The event, held in a hybrid mode, drew involvement from nine colleges in Jammu and Kashmir and beyond, with a total of 17 participants. Rupa Gupta, Joint Director MIER, Prof Nishta Rana, and Dr Monika Bajaj, Heads of the School of Education and School of Social Sciences and Humanities, along with faculty members and students from SSSH, attended the symposium. Principal Prof, while speaking, stressed the importance of sustainable practices, encouraging students to embrace eco-friendly activities.
Sant Mela Singh College also organized a symposium on the same theme under the supervision of Prof Anju Sudan (Incharge of Adult and Continuing Education Club and Population Club). Taruna Sharma (Lecturer, Environmental Science) commenced the program and highlighted the importance of World Earth Day. He also shared his views regarding betterment of our environment.
Under the banner of Shikshit Bharat, 2 J&K Girls Battalion and Department of Environmental Science, celebrated Earth Day in order to raise awareness amongst the students and in the areas adjoining college campus. Students participated in various activities like Poster Making, Slogan Writing etc. Speaking on the occasion, Principal GDC Paloura, Dr Ashu Vashisht, emphasized upon how the collective efforts of one and all can help fight the menace of plastic pollution and save the planet.
To commemorate the Day, National College of Education, Purkhoo Camp (Domana, Jammu) organized a tree plantation drive to sensitize the students towards the importance of trees. The students got a sense of purpose, a sense of ownership, they were doing something for themselves, their college and society and they really enjoyed that.
The Day was observed at GDC Udhampur by organizing, a cleanliness drive, slogan writing competition and interactive lectures under the patronage of Principal Dr Romesh Kumar Gupta, who sensitized the students about the importance of the Day. The lecture was followed by the interactive session where in student asked questions and cleared their doubts.
In GDC for Women Kathua, the Earth Day function was organized by Department of Environmental Sciences and Hariyali Eco Club. On the occasion, a documentary on Plastic Pollution in India was screened, focusing on steps to mitigate the menace of plastic pollution. Additionally, a Slogan cum Poster Making Competition on the theme “Planet vs Plastics” was organized. Dr Savi Behl presided over the event and emphasized the adoption of recyclable carry bags instead of plastics.
Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Reasi observed the Day by organizing a programme at Government High School Tanda (Reasi). A large number of school children and teachers participated in the programme, organized under the guidance of Head of KVK Reasi, Dr Banarsi Lal. He spoke on the protection of planet Earth and gave a detailed view of plastic pollution. KVK scientists urged the participants to fully participate in the protection and cleanliness of the area.
Key Health and Sanitation officials including Dr Vinod Sharma (Health Officer, JMC), Harjeet Singh (Sanitation Officer, Zone-II), Anoop Sharma (Sanitary Inspector) and Vijay Tiwari (IEC Expert, JMC) visited KC Public School on the World Earth Day to interact with members of the Environmental Club of the school. The event commenced with a ‘nukkad natak’ presented by members of the Sadan. Dr Vinod Sharma, in his speech, emphasized the crucial role of citizens in contributing to the betterment of the nation, particularly in managing waste efficiently.
The morning at Humanity Public School, Bassi Kalan (Bari Brahmana) was reverberated with excitement and enthusiasm of their students who engaged in meaningful activities to show their devotion and admiration for Mother Earth. A special assembly was organized to remind everyone about their responsibility towards Mother Earth. Students delivered speeches and recited poems. It was followed by a thought – provoking skit beautifully performed by the students of classes 4th, 6th and 7th.
To spread awareness about importance of Earth Day, an impressive function was held at Hermann Gmeiner School, Jammu. On the occasion, students delivered speeches and a skit to spread the message of preserving and keeping our surroundings clean. An environmental awareness rally was also taken out by the students under the guidance of Principal Mukesh Thakur.
