JAMMU/SRINAGAR, June 5: Different organizations here today celebrated World Environment Day and organized different programmes to safeguard the environment.
National Conference president and MP, Dr. Farooq Abdullah and vice president, Omar Abdullah in their message on World Environment Day said, Nation’s progress must not be at the cost of environment.
The duo said that reckless human activities in the form of deforestation, water and air pollution and overuse of natural resources has imperiled natural balance in the global environment and J&K has also not escaped the global pattern triggering extinction of various species by the wanton adulteration of our lakes and springs with plastic and other adulterants.
Shri Ranbir Campus of Central Sanskrit University celebrated Environment Day under The Mission Life campaign initiated by the Government of India to adopt environment-friendly lifestyle. The oath taking ceremony was organized under the chairmanship of Dr. Kailash Chandra Dash, Acting Director of the campus who appealed all the students and teachers to maintain a green and healthy environment for the betterment of coming generations.
World Environment Day was celebrated at Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University (SMVDU) Katra, in collaboration with J&K Pollution Control Committee (JKPCC). Vice Chancellor SMVDU, Prof. R.K Sinha along with Sat Paul Pakhru, Regional Director JKPCC, Nagendra Singh Jamwal, Registrar SMVDU and others planted saplings in the campus of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University.
On World Environment Day, students, faculties and non-academic staff of Indian Institute of Mass Communication, Northern Regional Campus, Jammu took the pledge on Mission Lifestyle for Environment. School of Social Sciences, Cluster University of Jammu celebrated World Environment Day by conducting plantation drive in the premises of School of Social Sciences. Dean School of Social Sciences, Cluster University of Jammu, Dr. Vishal Sharma shared the significance of the day with students and faculty of the School.
Central University of Jammu (CUJ) celebrated World Environment Day wherein Vice Chancellor CUJ, Prof. Sanjeev Jain, reiterated the importance of seven themes of Mission LiFE (Lifestyle for Environment): Save Water, Save Energy, Reduce Waste, Adopt sustainable food systems, Reduce E-waste, Adopt healthy lifestyles and say no to single-use plastic and called for adopting Lifestyle for Environment.
On World Environment Day, NSS volunteers of Campus Unit-VI with the association of Office of the Coordinator NSS, University of Jammu along with more than 100 participants from various departments of Jammu University and primarily from Department of Physical Education constituting Unit IV organized the Green Program of celebrating World Environment Day under the mentorship of Prof. Umesh Rai, Vice Chancellor and Chairman NSS, University of Jammu.
A poster-making and slogan-writing competition was organized on the theme ‘Go Green, Breathe Clean’ by The Law School, University of Jammu, on World Environment Day. Dr. Monika Bhardwaj, the Coordinator and Dr. Shubha Vats, the teacher incharge of the event, formally opened the event.
World Environmental Day was celebrated at Bahu Fort in collaboration with Department of Environment and Remote Sensing of Jammu University. Prof. Piyush Malvia, Dr. Deepika Slathia and others delivered lectures on the importance of celebrating World Environmental Day.

Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Poonch under the Directorate of Extension, Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology of Jammu celebrated World Environment Day on theme ‘Solution to plastic pollution’.
Krishi Vigyan Kendra Reasi of Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology Jammu celebrated World Environment Day. Large number of farmers of the area participated in the programme. Sr. Scientist & Head of KVK, Reasi, Dr. Banarsi Lal talked on environmental issues and gave a detailed view of plastic pollution.

NSS Unit and Nature Club of Government College of Education Jammu in collaboration with the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change organized an awareness workshop on Sustainable Practices and Mission LiFE through online mode.
Ajay Tanwar, Consultant, MGNCRE, Ministry of Education was the resource person of the workshop. Prof Aekta Gupta, Principal of the College, in her address, shed light on the LiFE Mission, an initiative spearheaded by the Government of India, emphasizing the significance of energy conservation, reduction in single-use plastics, tree plantation drives and the creation of micro-environments.
Ajay Tanwar’s insightful presentation motivated students to adopt eco-friendly behaviors as integral components of their lives. He highlighted the importance of embracing natural lifestyles as a key strategy for environmental preservation. He also provided a comprehensive overview of the objectives and significance of World Environment Day.
Dr Shubhra Jamwal, NSS PO encouraged the volunteers to adopt sustainable practices for environmental friendly lifestyle. Dr Shalini Sharma, Convener, Nature Club appreciated the team for organising such informative events which spread awareness about sustainable development and environment. Prof Sarita Dogra, Prof Seema Kumari, Prof Shapia Shameem, Prof Neeraj Verma and 40 volunteers participated in the event. Later, a compast unit was installed in the college.
Environmental Club, in collaboration with NSS unit of K.C College of Education celebrated World Environment Day by organizing an awareness campaign. Based on this year’s theme ‘Beat Plastic Pollution’, an activity was initiated where the club members and NSS volunteers made paper and cloth bags.
Tree plantation drive was organized by NSS Unit of Dogra Degree College in collaboration with Eco Warriors Club of the College on World Environment Day.

RBI Jammu celebrated World Environment Day and with active participation of its staff members, a ‘Green Walk cum cleanliness’ drive was flagged off from its office premises at Rail Head Complex, Jammu. On World Environment Day, CPI (M) leader, Mohammad Yousuf Tarigami expressed serious concern about ecological devastation that has befallen the beautiful region of Jammu & Kashmir.
