World Environment Day celebrated with great enthusiasm across J&K

JAMMU, June 5: The World Environment Day was celebrated today with great enthusiasm by various Government bodies/departments, educational institutions, security forces, environmentalists and other organizations across Jammu and Kashmir by organizing plantation drives, webinars on environment issues and other activities.
District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) Udhampur celebrated “World Environment Day” by conducting a webinar in collaboration with some Government and private schools. Yash Paul Bourney, Chairman DLSA Udhampur was the chief guest of the webinar, which was held under the supervision of Sub Judge, Rajni Sharma (Secretary DLSA Udhampur).
DLSA Kargil under the chairmanship of the Chairman DLSA and Principal District and Sessions Judge Kargil Muhammad Rafiq Chak celebrated World Environment Day in collaboration with the Forest Department Kargil. On the occasion, a plantation drive was carried out where in different kinds of saplings were planted at the Rgyal Khatoon Forest Park Biamathang Kargil.
On the occasion, Mayor Jammu Municipal Corporation Chander Mohan Gupta in collaboration with All India Gyatri Parivar, Bharat Vikas Parishad and Sashastra Seema Bal having its sector head quarters at Channi Himmat Jammu conducted a mega plantation drive in the park situated at Sector-6 Channi Himmat, Jammu. Earlier, Mayor along with Advocate Purnima Sharma Deputy Mayor JMC, Kuldeep Singh Chairman Social Justice Committee laid foundation stone for construction of “Garbage Transfer Station” at Bhagwati nagar, Jammu.
Srinagar Municipal Corporation organized multiple special sanitation drives and plantation drives to mark the occasion. Divisional Commissioner Kashmir P K Pole was the chief guest at the main event which was organized at Bemina. Divisional Commissioner along with Commissioner SMC went to several areas of the city where the events took place.
To celebrate the Day, District Administration Reasi carried out a plantation drive in the premises of Mini Secretariat DC Office Reasi. District officers from different departments participated in the programme. On the occasion, DDC Reasi Charandeep Singh urged the staff members to grow more and more plants in their localities for environmental sustainability. He was accompanied by ADDC Jyoti Slathia, CPO Sunita Kanchan and ACD Anirudh Rai.
On the occasion of World Environment Day, CPI (M) leader, Mohammad Yousuf Tarigami said, it is time for the people living on Earth to stop harming nature and polluting it further. In his message on World Environment Day, he expressed grave concern for the incessant degradation of eco-system in Jammu and Kashmir and said that water bodies of the region have shrunk drastically.
To mark the occasion, Apni Party youth provincial president, Khalid Rathore has also appealed to the people of J&K to greenify their lifestyles and avoid using materials that have potential to deplete our environment.
Department of Horticulture celebrated the Day by organizing plantation drives in all districts of Jammu Division. Director Horticulture, Jammu, Ram Sevak, launched the drive at Panchayat Ghar Badyal Brahmana in Jammu district by planting Litchi saplings. In all, around 1000 fruit plants were planted by Chief Horticulture Officers in their respective districts.
Department of Agriculture Production & Farmers Welfare, Jammu celebrated the Day here at Krishi Bhawan, Talab Tillo, with the theme of “Ecosystem Restoration”. Speaking on the occasion, the Director AP & FW, Jammu, K K Sharma said that the purpose of celebrating this day is to spread awareness among people, especially children, to conserve the environment in the highest interest of mankind.
Directorate of Tourism, Jammu organized plantation drives at various locations of Jammu region including Yatri Niwas- Bhagwati Nagar, Mansar, Patnitop, Katra, Rajouri, Kishtwar. While kick-starting the drive at Yatri Niwas, Director Tourism Vivekanand Rai said it is the responsibility of each of us to be more mindful of our daily actions to minimize impact on the ecosystem.
NHPC Limited celebrated the Day with great enthusiasm at NHPC Residential Colony, Faridabad. A K Singh, CMD NHPC, N K Jain, Director (Personnel), R P Goyal, Director (Finance), A K Srivastava, CVO, Sudha Singh and other senior officers and employees were present on the occasion. A special plantation drive was held wherein over 60 saplings of various shady and fruit bearing species were planted at the NHPC colony.
Forest Department Doda in collaboration with IRP 5th battalion Doda celebrated World Environment Day at IRP headquarters Beoli, Doda. On the occasion, the saplings of Deodar and other environment enriching species were planted. Satpaul Pakhroo, Conservator of Forests was the chief guest on the occasion.
To mark the occasion, the Department of Kashmiri in collaboration with the Directorate of Students Welfare (DSW), Central University of Kashmir (CUK) organised a webinar ‘Quran and Environment’ on Saturday. Speaking on the occasion, Vice Chancellor, Prof Mehraj ud Din Mir, said the damaged ecosystem could be restored by planting saplings, greening cities and cleaning up rivers and streams.
The Day with theme ‘Ecosystem Restoration’ was celebrated by University of Jammu wherein the Department of Environmental Sciences organized an international webinar to highlight the importance of ecosystem restoration with an emphasis on recreating energy-smart ecosystems in Asia’s degraded forests and landscapes. Chief Guest of the occasion, Prof M K Dhar, Vice-Chancellor, University of Jammu expressed his grave concern over the fast-degrading environs.
The School of Sciences, Cluster University of Jammu, in collaboration with Departments of Environmental Sciences of the Constituent Colleges of the University, organized an online programme to celebrate the Day. Rohit Mehra, known as green man of Punjab and Dr CM Seth (eminent environmentalist) were the key note speakers.
An informative and interactive session was organized by the NSS Campus Units on World Environment Day under the chairmanship of Vice-Chancellor University of Jammu, Prof Manoj Kumar Dhar, who is also the Chairman, NSS, University of Jammu. The chief resource person on the occasion was OP Sharma Vidyarthi, retired Principal Chief Conservator of Forests.
Under the leadership of Vice-Chancellor Prof (Dr) R K Sinha, Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University, Katra, celebrated World Environment Day by organizing a plantation program near Kailash Hostel and the VC Lounge. Those who participated in the plantation drive include Prof Ashok Kumar Sharma (Dean, Faculty of Sciences) and Dr Supran Kumar Sharma (Dean, Faculty of Management).
On World Environment Day, SKUAST-Jammu organised a webinar on ‘Ecosystem Restoration’. Speaking on the occasion Prof J P Sharma, Vice Chancellor stressed for efficient water and fertilizer. In his remarks, Dr S K Gupta, Director Extension highlighted the importance of World Environment Day for the benefit of the mankind.
University of Kashmir (KU) on organized an online seminar to mark World Environment Day. KU Vice-Chancellor, Prof Talat Ahmad inaugurated the seminar titled ‘Conserving and Restoring Ecosystems’. In his address, Prof Talat said the Himalayan region is facing multiple challenges on the environment protection front and everyone will have to join hands to ensure that all pro-environment campaigns and initiatives yield better results on the ground.
Directorate of Health Services Kashmir observed the World Environment Day by planting sapling in the compound of DHSK office. Director Health Services Dr Mushtaq Ahmed Rather along with other officials also planted sapling in the premises of the office. Dr Mushtaq in his message appealed to the people to maintain a healthy and eco-friendly environment and instructed the health officials to ensure a healthy and hygienic environment in and around the hospitals.
The Institution of Engineers, Jammu Local Centre celebrated World Environment Day at Channi Himmat, Jammu by organizing a webinar on the theme “Ecosystem Restoration”. A large number of engineers, scholars, academicians, environment lovers, and members of the civil society attended the webinar. Five Papers on the theme were presented by P K Nanda, B L Rawal, Ranjeev Sawhney, Mir Muneer Hussain and Akash Dusgotra.
A webinar on World Environment Day was organized by Institution of Engineers (India), Srinagar Centre and National Institute of Disaster Management (NIDM), Union Ministry of Home Affairs, in collaboration with Divisional Administration Kashmir, Government PG College for Women, Gandhi Nagar Jammu, J&K Forest Department, SSM College of Engineering and Technology Parihaspora and J&K State Emergency Operation Centre, Srinagar.
“World Environment Day” was celebrated with great enthusiasm at Salal Power Station. Under this, a special “Plantation drive” was conducted in the Power station, which was inaugurated by Head of Salal Power Station and General Manager (In-Charge) N Ram by doing plantation. Along with this, the operation of two “Organic Waste Composting Machines” was also inaugurated at Jyotipuram.
In connection with the World Environment Day, All India Radio Akashavani Jammu organized a programme in Dogri language on the topic “Mahnu Di Zindagi Ch Chapasm Da Ke Yogdhan hai?”. The programme namely “Ghar Sansar” which was broadcasted this afternoon, include ‘Interview Talk’ followed by poem reading session by Samvedna Sharma, a Dogri poetess and Research Scholar.
To create awareness of the Environment and Nature, Aryans Group of Colleges, Rajpura, near Chandigarh organized a webinar on World Environment Day, under the theme ‘Ecosystem Restoration’. Dr. Ranjana Sharma Garg, Mrs North India Queen 2019 and an environmentalist interacted with the students. Dr Anshu Kataria, Chairman, Aryans Group presided over the webinar.
State Bank of India (SBI) celebrated World Environment Day at its Local Head Office in Chandigarh. Anukool Bhatnagar, Chief General Manager, SBI Chandigarh Circle along with CMC members planted saplings which reflected Bank’s concern for environment conservation and spread positive message across the society that the largest bank of the nation also cares for the nature.
The Department of Civil Engineering of Yogananda College of Engineering and Technology (YCET) Jammu organized a competition on the day by involving all the students of all the branches under the patronage of Er Rajnish Magotra, HOD (Civil Engg) on the theme, “Ecosystem Restoration.” The event was adjudged by Sonika Koul, PRO (YCET) and Amit Sharma, Principal IECS Jammu.
An online symposium and quiz competition was organized by Dogra Degree College Bari Brahmana under the chairmanship of Simran Devi, Lecturer Environmental Studies. The topic of the symposium was “Ecosystem Restoration” which is the theme of this year’s World Environment Day. Each student spoke for about three minutes and expressed his/her views in form of poetry as well as prose.
NSS Unit of Government College of Education Jammu organised an online ‘plant a tree competition’ and ‘create from waste competition’ on the Environment Day.
The program was adroitly conducted by NSS Program Officer Dr Shubhra Jamwal of GCOE along with NSS volunteers of the college. Prof (Dr) Kulvinder Kour, Principal of the College, lauded the efforts of the College staff, students and volunteers and emphasised upon the importance of such events as it aware people that environment should not be taken for granted and must be respected for its values.
Dr Jyoti Parihar and Dr Shalini Sharma were the jury members of the competition the results of which will be declared soon on June 8.
GDC Vijaypur celebrated World Environment Day by organizing various online activities under the leadership of College Principal Prof (Dr) Sangeeta Sudan. Prof Poonam Kundan, coordinator of the event inspired the students to plant at least one sapling on this particular day.
The Day was celebrated by Senior Wing Cadets of 2 JK Girls Battalion NCC of GCW Parade Ground Jammu with great fanfare on the theme “Re-imagine and Recreate”. The programme was organized under the guidance of the College Principal and ANO Lieutenants Suman Lata.
NSS Unit of GDC Udhampur virtually celebrated the Environment Day to aware the student regarding environment related burning issues and inspired the participants towards adopting sustainable, organic and healthy diets. About 150 NSS volunteers from the two NSS units of the College participated in the webinar.
The NSS, NCC and IQAC unit of GDC Bhaderwah organized online week-long event on World Environment Day. The students of the college participated in different activities by making audio, video clips, pamphlets poetry, poster making and worked on different themes such as save trees, save life, conserve natural resources, shifting to renewable sources of energy, greening mother earth.
The NSS unit of Government College of Engineering & Technology Jammu organized a national level webinar to commemorate World Environment Day. The event was held under the supervision of College Principal Dr Sameru Sharma. She told that the concept behind observing the Say is to focus on the importance of environment and to remind people that nature should not be taken for granted.
An online lecture was organized to commemorate World Environment Day by HKM Government Degree College Bandipora on the topic, ‘Reconnecting with Nature’. A renowned Kashmir poet writer, social activist and environmentalist, Zareef A Zareef gave a detailed lecture on the theme.
Department of Environmental Science, GDC Marh organized an event ‘Display your Creativity’ to promote eco-friendly way of reducing the problem of polythene pollution on the World Environment under the patronage of Prof Aekta Gupta, Principal of the College wherein various students from different streams of the College participated and prepared handbags, carry bags made of cloth material.
In an earnest attempt to lend a green touch to environment, Cadets of 2 J&K Girls Battalion Government College for Women Gandhi Nagar Jammu celebrated World Environment Day by paying a tribute to mother nature. The celebration was started with plantation of saplings by the cadets of the College.
An online poster making and slogan writing competition was organised to observe World Environment Day by the Department of Environmental Science in collaboration with NSS unit of GDC Khour. The event was organized by Prof Dalip Kumar, HoD EVS and Prof Gurvinder Kour, NSS PO under the patronage of College Principal Prof Hans Raj. About 25 participants of different Colleges across the UT of J&K participated in the competition.
Department of Environmental Science in collaboration with Literary Club of GDC Kalakote organized online slogan writing and video shooting competition on the theme, “Ecosystem Restoration: Live and Let Live.” The event was judged by Prof Anayat-Ullah Khan (HoD Arabic), Prof Priyanka Kumari (HoD Hindi) and Dr Mohd Shakoor (HoD Urdu).
Ek Bharat Shrestha Bharat Club in collaboration with Department of Environmental Science GDC Sunderbani organized inter-college poster making and slogan writing competition wherein various students participated in this competition. The event was judged by HoD Hindi Prof Ravinder Kumar and HoD Economic Prof Sham Lal.
GGM Science College under the patronage of Principal Dr Ravender Tickoo celebrated the Day with the theme Ecosystem Restoration. An online video making competition was organized by NSS in collaboration with Department of Environmental Sciences. A total of 60 students from 14 different institutes of the UT participated in the event.
Department of Environmental Science, Government MAM College organised an online webinar to mark the occasion. Dr Neeraj Sharma, Incharge of Institute of Mountain Environment, Bhaderwah Campus, University of Jammu, was the Resource Person for the webinar. About 100 students and teaching faculty of the College participated in the event.
The Day was also celebrated by GDC Jourian, where Principal of the College Prof Kuldeep Raj Sharma talked in detail about importance of environment and natural resources in our daily life. The chief resource person on the program Dr Anirudh Rai (ACD Reasi) delivered his lecture through zoom platform.
Department of Botany and NSS Unit of GDC R S Pura celebrated World Environment Day by organizing an Inter-Collegiate Online Quiz Competition under the patronship of Principal Dr G S Rakwal. Hundreds of students from various Universities and Degree Colleges participated in the competition. Students scoring more than 70% marks in the quiz were provided with e-certificates.
GDC Dudu Basantgarh organized an Inter -College poster making and slogan writing competition on the theme “Save Environment Save Life”. The Competition took place under the supervision of Principal of the College Dr Bhavnaish Chand. E-certificates were given to all the winners.
Department of Environmental Sciences, GDC Jindrah in collaboration with NSS Unit of the College under the guidance of Principal Prof Dr Raj Shree Dhar observed “World Environment Day”. Students of the college make photography of various ecosystems of Jindrah and prepared video messages for creating awareness regarding approaches to Ecosystem restoration. The programme was organized by Prof Deepika Sharma (HOD EVS) and Dr Sunil Dutt Sharma (NSS Officer of the College).
GDC Chenani in collaboration with the Career College, Bhopal and Environment and Social welfare Society, Khajuraho organized a national webinar on the theme ‘Preventing, Halting & Reversing the degradation of Ecosystems’. The College also participated in the International Consortium on Ecological Restoration in joint collaboration with 42 National and International institutes.
Department of Environmental Sciences in collaboration with NSS unit of GDC Majalta organized an online webinar to mark the occasion. Dr Asha Singh, Assistant Professor, GDC Bishnah was the resource person of the webinar. She delivered a talk on the topic ‘Environmental challenges of the 21st century’.
Ek Bharat Shrestha Bharat Club in collaboration with Department of Environmental Sciences, GDC Sunderbani organized an inter-college Poster Making and Slogan Writing Competition to celebrate the Day. A total of 35 students participated in both the activities Both the activities were judged by HoD Hindi Prof Ravinder Kumar and HoD Economics Prof Sham Lal.
Government Polytechnic College Kathua organized online painting competition on the theme ‘Ecosystem Restoration’ under the supervision of Principal Arun Bangotra. In the competition, 31 students of 2nd, 4th and 6th semester participated.
Department of Environmental Sciences of GDC Bishnah celebrated the Day by organizing online poster making competition on the theme “Global Warming: Stop Climate Change”. This competition was organized under the guidance of Dr Anuradha Pandoh, Principal GDC Bishnah. The first three winners were awarded with certificates of merit.
GDC Thannamandi celebrated World Environment Day by organizing a national level quiz competition on the theme “Ecosystem Restoration”. A total of 302 students of various universities and colleges of the country participated in the event. The participants who scored more than 65% marks in the quiz were awarded with the E-certificates.
To mark the occasion, GDC Purmandal organized an online inter-collegiate quiz. The event was held under the patronage of Prof Seema Mir, College Principal.
Bharat Scouts and Guides (BSG) Udhampur celebrated World Environment Day under the guidance of District Organizing Commissioner Scouts Udhampur Rakesh Singh. BSG planted different trees and herbs of medicinal plants like lemon, Jamun, Giloy etc within the premises of Chief Education Office Udhampur along with the co-operation of civil society.
IG BSF N S Jamwal led a plantation drive at BSF Paloura camp Jammu in which saplings of various plants were planted to give campus a green cover. In this drive at Paloura campus various types of trees were planted in which S K Singh, DIG and all ranks and families participated with lot of enthusiasm and vigor.
Natrang Jammu organized an online Cartoon Exhibition by famous cartoonist Chander Shekhar in connection with the celebrations of World Environment Day. The exhibition was inaugurated by Balwant Thakur Director Natrang and said that it has been the endeavour of Natrang to organise the majority of the world’s days using art as a medium to share meaningful thoughts on that particular day.
Aadarsh Bhartiya Samaj (ABS), a social organization working to promote education, environment, health and nationhood among the general masses and students celebrated World Environment Day by organizing different kind of activities. The ABS requested all to fight global warming by planting more trees, avoiding wastage of water and use or burn plastics.
To celebrate the occasion, Nations Development Association (NDA) Bishnah organized an activity under the guidance of Nehru Yuva Kendra Sangathan (NYKS) Jammu and Sports Deputy Director Jammu Region, Nissar Ahmed Butt and supervision of Sushil Singh Charak Chairman of NDA. A tree plantation drive was undertaken in Bishnah in which the social activists participated enthusiastically.
Samvedna Society Chairman, Keshav Chopra organized a plantation drive to celebrate the occasion. During the drive, various plants and fruit bearing saplings were planted.
On World Environment Day, a 3-year-old girl from Srinagar, Filza Faheem was awarded by the South Asian Voluntary Association of Environmentalists (SAVAE) for her efforts to protect the ecology. Filza plants a tree each month.
On the occasion, ‘Live For Others-Being Helpful’ foundation started a drive in which water filled earthen pots were installed on different trees and other surfaces so the birds can drink water from these pots. Around 50 earthen pots filled with clean water were fixed on trees and placed on solid surfaces so that other animals can also drink water from these pots.
On World Environment Day, Nirankari Mission pledged to restore environment. The Mission stated that owing to the lockdowns across the country, regular pan-India campaigns are not possible but the message of ‘Ecosystem Restoration’has been shared with all the devotees during a virtual global congregation motivating and inspiring all to be mindful of their local ecosystem, restoring it to the best of their capacity.
Tanushka Rakwal, a class 10 student of Air Force School Jammu brought laurels to J&K by participating in prestigious international talk show by CEDx Global Talk Education Foundation. The event was organized on the occasion of World Environment Day and the topic of discussion was ‘An Appeal to Save Mother Earth’.
A plantation drive was organized in Ward 51, Channi Himmat by Rajkumar Tarkhan, JMC Councillor and J&K BJP leader. JMC Mayor, Chander Mohan Gupta, Deputy Mayor, Purnima Sharma, DIG Range CRPF, Rajender Prasad, Commandant 76th Battalion, Kamak Sisodia, DFO Sunil Singh and others were also present on the occasion.
The Day was celebrated by Aware India Foundation in Jaganoo and Ashawganda plants were distributed among the locals of Jaganoo by Puran Chand, Naib Tehsildhar Jaganoo along with Mohan Lal, Naib Sarpanch, Panchayat Jaganoo. These plants were provided by Sain Dass, Foundation member.
Central Reserve Police Force conducted a plantation drive at Jambazpora area of Baramulla with the active support of Pervaiz Ahmed Wani, Divisional Forest Officer, Baramulla. With the aim to support the cause of green planet and arrest the depleting forests cover, 100 saplings of Deodar were planted.
137 Battalion of CRPF along with J&K Police and Wildlife Division Jammu also conducted plantation drive in Nandini area to celebrate the World Environment Day in presence of Commandant Mohd Khalid Khan. Over 150 saplings Amla, Jamun and Arjun plants were planted during the drive.
Under the aegis of Ace of Spades Division, Mendhar Gunners organized a ‘Tree plantation cum awareness programme’ on World Environment Day in the areas of Mendhar, Mankot, Basuni and upper Dharana near LOC. SDPO Mendhar, Sarpanch of villages, school staff, children and other local dignitaries participated in the programme.
SSB 7th Battalion Jammu based at Khellani (Doda) organized plantation drive on the occasion of World Environment Day at Khellani & Jathi areas.
The plantation drive was also organized by 166 Battalion CRPF. Puneet Kumar Kualdhar, Commandant planted various kind of saplings on the occasion and also made an appeal “Plant the trees and save environment”.
