JAMMU, Sept 29: Awareness camps, walkathons and various other events across Jammu region marked the World Heart Day, today.
To promote heart healthy activities and to observe World Heart Day, Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Narayana Superspeciality Hospital organized a walkathon with the theme ‘Power Your Life’ in Jammu and Udhampur districts. People in thousands from all walks of life came forward to take a step towards a healthy heart, today morning. The event was flagged off by Simrandeep Singh, Deputy Commissioner, Jammu district, at Dushhera Ground, Gandhi Nagar. Passing through various market lanes include Apsra Road, Gole Market the rally culminated at Rotary Club Green Belt Park.
In Udhampur, the walkathon was flagged off by Deputy Commissioner, Udhampur, Niraj Kumar from Mini Stadium, which after passing through Shaheed Bhagat Singh Park, Gole Market, Main Bazaar and Salathia Chowk culminated at DC office complex. People from all walks of life including school and college going children, sports personnel and military personnel participated in the event.  Both the events were organized by Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Narayana Superspeciality Hospital, Jammu in association with Sahyog India.
World Health Day was also celebrated by Cardiology Depeartment, Government Super Speciality Hospital, Jammu. Stressing on this year’s theme “Power Your Life”, Dr Sushil K Sharma, Head of Cardiology Department, said fuel your heart, move your heart and love your heart for healthy living. He pointed out that heart diseases are increasing globally because of high consumption of tobacco, alcohol, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obesity, physical inactivity, sedentary lifestyle and various other reasons. “The risk of Cardiac diseases can be reduced by adopting heart healthy food, making exercises part of our daily routine, walking for 30 minutes almost every day, decreasing quantum of fat rich diet and consuming heart healthy oils,” said Dr Sharma. Renowned cardiologist Dr Mohan Lal (former Head), Dr Gurjit Singh, Dr SK Bali (Nephrologist) and Dr Noor Ali (Head Cardiac Surgery) were present on the occasion.
On occasion of World Heart Day, an awareness drive on prevention and control of Cardiovascular diseases was organized by 136 SHO for serving personnel and families in the form of a symposium and exhibition followed by a quiz competition at 136 SHO. Health education lectures on types of heart diseases and prevention of heart diseases were undertaken by Lt Col Sumit Bhasker, MD Medicine and Maj Manjunath SR Officer Commanding 136 SHO. The quiz competition was conducted by Lt Anurag and prizes were distributed to winners. The symposium and exhibition benefited troops and families of Jammu garrison.
