JAMMU, Oct 10: World Mental Health Day was observed in the Post Graduate Department of Psychology, University of Jammu, here today.
The one day workshop was inaugurated by Prof Jigar Mohammed, Dean Social Sciences in a well attended function.
The theme of the workshop was ‘Awareness Action Integration’.
Mental Health Tree was placed at the entrance of the Department of Psychology bearing appropriate phrases on mental health.
The Head of Department Prof Arti Bakhshi gave formal welcome address. Retired Professor Sarada Sreedeviamma, Consultant clinical psychologist from Cochin University of Science and Technology spoke on the topic “Challenges in Counselling to Enhance Mental Health”.
In an interactive session Prof Sarada said “challenge is absence of mental health system.” The Dean, Social Sciences, Head of Department, faculty, research scholars and the students carried out the Mental Health March lead by Prof Sarada in the University Campus to create awareness. The students actively participated while holding banners and wearing T shirts bearing messages on mental health. The participants met Vice Chancellor, University of Jammu, who endorsed the students and appreciated the efforts made by the students and the faculty of Department of Psychology.
The post lunch session of the workshop was conducted by Dr Manu Arora, Psychiatrist, GMC Jammu who enlightened the participants while speaking on the occasion about “Diagnosis and Treatment Modality in Mentally Ill Patients”. Dr Arora said that our State lacks behind in awareness of mental health due to lesser number of trained professionals.
The programme was conducted by Aditi Pangotra, Sneh Mirakhur, Isha Malhotra and Pooja Sharma students of MA Psychology, 1st and 3rd semester.
Sonali Jamwal student MA Psychology conducted proceedings of the programme.
Dr Sarita Sood, Shivani Sahdev and Eisha Gohil, faculty members were present on the occasion. The one day workshop concluded with vote of thanks and mementoes were presented to the resource persons.
