The Union Minister for Environment is satisfied that our country has performed fairly well in the implementation of Kigali Amendment to the Montreal Protocol. This is a campaign of general awareness among the people about the environmental cleanliness and the active collaboration between the Government, industries and stakeholders in implementation of Ozone Depleting Substances (ODS) phase-out programme in the country. This campaign was among the most widespread engagements of the Ministry for awareness generation, carried out with active partnership of states through schools and academic institutions.
The conduct of campaign among school children because awareness at an early stage helps in formulating the attitude towards smart environment. The awareness campaign saw a participation of about 28-lakh students in more than 13, 000 schools and reached out to 214 districts across 16 states of the country.
India played a crucial role in the adoption of the Kigali Amendment to the Montreal Protocol. This campaign was among the most widespread engagements of the Ministry for awareness generation, carried out with active partnership of states through schools and academic institutions. The Ministry has also brought out various publications for the awareness’ of general public and technicians and industrialists for example in the areas of Refrigeration and Air-conditioning (RAC) which have direct bearing on Ozone sphere.
A series of publications include a handbook on HCFC phase-out and energy efficiency in buildings, the first edition of ‘news TRAC; and a newsletter for service technicians. These two publications were launched as part of the enabling component of India’s HCFC phase-out management plan, for which United Nations Environment Programme is the cooperating agency and Energy Efficiency Services Ltd and The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) are the national implementing partners.
The initiatives of the Union Ministry of Environment we would also like to remind the Ministry the vastness of Indian Industrial world and the effort needed to bring awareness to this sector on a very large scale. Conducting the campaign through the participation of the student community is good but that is not the whole campaign. More importantly we shall have to care for the vast industrial India which has the maximum capacity of emissions that are detrimental to the Ozone sphere. We think that intermittent and regional workshops could help much in bringing awareness among the people.
